3 major purposes of the book of Jonah:
• To show you how God pursues sinners
3 major purposes of the book of Jonah:
• To show you how God pursues sinners
• To show you how God uses His people in the world
You can’t find the will of God apart from His major purposes on earth.
3 major purposes of the book of Jonah:
• To show you how God pursues sinners
• To show you how God uses His people in the world
• To contrast the difference in God’s heart and ours
What was it that made Jonah so angry?

1. Jonah had a Theological Problem
How can God keep his promises to uphold his people and at the same time show mercy to his people’s enemies?
What was it that made Jonah so angry?

1. Jonah had a Theological Problem
2. Jonah had a Heart Problem

Our “beliefs” are actualized in our commitments, desires and identities.
Jonah’s particular national identity was more foundational to his self-worth than his role as a servant of the God of all nations.

•The real God had been just a means to an end.
•He was using God to serve his real god.

When our identity is more rooted in our race and nationality than in being SAVED SINNERS AND CHILDREN OF GOD, we have a problem.

History has proven:
•Rightful racial pride can become racism.
•Rightful national pride and patriotism can become imperialism.
Whenever we read the Bible in order to say, AHA! I’m right!” or to make us feel more righteous, we are misreading it, we are missing its central message.

When we read or use the Bible rightly, it humbles us, critiques us, and encourages us with God’s love in spite of us.
What was it that made Jonah so angry?

1. Jonah had a Theological Problem
2. Jonah had a Heart Problem
3. Jonah had a problem with Self-righteousness

At the root of self-righteousness is idolatry. As long as there is something more important than God in your heart, you will be, like Jonah, both fragile and self-righteous.
True freedom is found only when the power of our idols is identified and broken.

•When we recognize all the ways we make good things into God things.
•When we identify all the ways we are trying to save ourselves.
Ask God’s forgiveness and for His heart of mercy toward any people of place you may have deemed deserving of judgment or too wicked to be worth saving.

Ask God for a second chance. You may have disobeyed the Lord to the point that you believe He can no longer use you. Look at Jonah!!!
A God who substitutes himself for us and suffers so that we may go free is a God you can trust. Jonah mistrusted the goodness of God, but he didn’t know about the cross. What is our excuse?
