Praying with Fire | Can I Have Your Attention

Praying with Fire | Can I Have Your Attention

Prayer is the most powerful tool we have at our disposal and taking advantage of this tool is remarkably simple...even though we often complicate it unnecessarily. Join us for this summer mini-series where we unpack powerful truths about prayer from the most famous prayer in the Bible.

Welcome to Mission Hills!

Mission Hills is a church family—a family who wants to extend to you the same love, hope, and joy that we have received. We know that we cannot be all things to all people. But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!

If you are a first time guest, we would love to meet you! Stop by the Welcome Center for a free gift!

The Lord's prayer is meant to teach us an attitude, not strategy.
We don't have to do this because:
1. God is the ultimate multi-tasker.
2. God's attention is already on us. (Psalm 33:18)...
We don’t have to fight for God’s attention.
1. Sometimes we fight for God’s attention by using old-school “Church” language.
2. Sometimes we fight for God’s attention by repeating requests.
3. Sometimes we fight for God’s attention by repeating God’s name.
4. Sometimes we fight for God’s attention by manufacturing emotion.
We don't pray to tell God what we need, we pray to declare that we need God.
1. Our education makes it hard to recognize our dependence.
2. Our access to information makes it hard to recognize our dependence.
3. The things we have accumulated make it hard to recognize our dependence.
4. Success that we have experienced makes it hard to recognize our dependence.
God is too good a Father to let us forget that we are no longer orphans.
This is not an exclusive teaching on prayer:
// There is no praise in this prayer.
// There is no thanksgiving in this prayer.
The Lord's Prayer is mean to teach us an attitude, not strategy.
[Recognizing:] "This, then, is how you should pray: "Our Father in heaven,” (Mat 6:9a)
[Depending:] “hallowed be your name,” (Matt. 6:9b NIV)
[Depending:] “your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” (Mat 6:10 NIV)
[Depending:] Give us today our daily bread. (Matt. 6:11 NIV)
[Depending:] And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (Matt. 6:12 NIV)
Please lead us so that we don’t fall into the traps the evil one has set for us.
Pray as a confident child depending on a good Father.
7 Day Challenge:
// 1. Identify ways that we are living as though we are still orphans.
// 2. Recognize that we are praying to a good Father.
// 3. Confidently request the basics (necessities, forgiveness, guidance)
