Psalm 82 | gods on the Ground

Psalm 82 | gods on the Ground

The Bible is filled with truth that has the power to transform our lives. Some of it speaks to the head while other parts of God's Word speak to the heart...and some of it builds a life-giving bridge between the two. Join us for a deep-dive into just this kind of truth from the book of Psalms.

But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!

A psalm of Asaph.
This psalm is a judgment against God's people for failing to live out his priorities.
#1 - The Hebrew word for “assembly” here almost always refers to the people of Israel.
#2 - The psalm itself says the “gods” are “sons of the Most High." (see v.6)
“You are all sons of the Lord your God." (Deuteronomy 14:1)
#3 - Jesus said this psalm referred to the people who “received God’s Word."
Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your Law, 'I have said you are "gods"'? If He called them 'gods,' to whom the word of God came…” (John 10:34-35
#4 – The judgement God renders in this psalm is based on commandments He gave to Israel.
The “great assembly” of “gods” is God’s people.
When we are reading poetry, we look for big ideas, not technical precision.
God hates it when we compromise with evil people just because they can help us.
Where am I most tempted to compromise with evil people because I think they can help me?
God helps those who are unable to help themselves and cry out to Him in their helplessness.
God doesn’t expect us to pay Him back, but he does expect us to pay it forward.
The world starts crumbling when the people of God fail to live out the priorities of God.
We are not servants following orders, we are children living out our Father's priorities.
God calls His children to live out His priorities.
Application:

When you see helplessness, help!
2. Give.
God calls His people to live out His priorities…and one of his highest priorities is helping those who cannot help themselves.
