Context:
• Scribes (Matthew calls them Pharisees) have come from Jerusalem to Galilee to assess Jesus, especially His ministry of healing and deliverance.
• Their conclusion: Jesus is possessed by Beelzebul.
• Blasphemy—“to speak against”
• How sufficient was the cross?

The work of the (Holy) Spirit of God
1. The Spirit convicts the world of what is right, of what is wrong, and of personal error.
1. The Spirit convicts the world of what is right, of what is wrong, and of personal error.
2. The Spirit reveals the Son (Jesus).
The condition of the scribes:
1. They refuse to hear, feel, understand, and acknowledge the work of the Holy Spirit.
2. They refuse to celebrate others healing, deliverance, or freedom.
3. They refuse to comprehend that their “system” for reaching and understanding God is insufficient. They are convinced that they do not need grace.
What this is not:
Not and act of impulse or ignorance, but of continued, willful rejection of the truth concerning Jesus
Examples of grace:
• Luke 23:40-43, Thief on the cross
• John 3:1-21, Nicodemus
• Acts 9, Saul
• John 4, Woman at the well
• Matthew 27:54, Roman centurion who crucified Jesus
