The Bible tells us that God is not only in the business of redeeming us, but also of changing us. As with anything in life, change does not happen overnight, but rather through a sometimes painful process that refines us into something better. The truth is God accepts us just as we are, but he refuses to leave us there!

SANCTIFIED MEANS BEING MADE RIGTHEOUS
God has called us to first repent before making any changes in our lives. Our old self is gone, and thanks to God and the Holy Spirit's power, we are able to put off our old self behind us. The real challenge is how do you motivate people to change? The sad truth is that too many times we read the Bible through the lens of we "should" change or "should" repent because the Bible says so, so it must be right. Although there is truth in that statement, the Bible is more than a set of rules and regulations to make our life miserable. The Bible is a book of life giving principles. Repentance is only possible when we realize that all of God's mandates are not to sour our lives but to enrich them. Every commandment, for example brings us to a more vibrant life, while here on Earth.
The second process that God wants to use to change us is the process of insight. There are too many people to go to scripture to just learn principles and theories, without actually practicing them in their lives. The reason why these principles are meant to be practices, is that they provide insight into our strengths and weaknesses. Scripture is just one of the tools that God uses to give us insight into our lives. another tool that God uses are people. The Bible even reminds us that Iron sharpens iron, just as we are shaped by the meaningful relationships that we keep. However, in order to gain insight from relationships, we must practice a higher level of transparency and vulnerability that allows others to hold us accountable. Although this process may seem scary to many, God is using others to teach us more about ourselves.
The Bible reminds us that pain is temporary, but the fruit that it provides is eternal. Many times God uses discipline as a way of shaping and pruning our lives. Discipline is an interesting word because it is not just the word to describe the process but also the result. We become more disciplined through discipline. Discipline creates structure that is required us in the shaping of our lives to be more like His. Although painful at times, we cannot learn or change until this structure has been created. In other words, no pain, no gain.
