Today is a huge milestone for us as a congregation as we celebrate our new Name: Doxa Deo Wilgeheuwel. But we also celebrate the fact that we’re part of the bigger
Doxa Deo Family and so please watch this video clip with me.
Doxa Deo. I want to talk to you about those two words. THE DOXA of DEO. Doxa is Greek for Glory and Deo is Latin for God.
For the earth will be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, As the waters cover the sea. (Hab 2:14)
Now if a sports celebrity would say something like: “I’m not in this for the money, I’m in it for the Glory” then he’s saying that it’s all about the praise and honour that he receives from other people.
But the Glory that Habakkuk is referring to is not the same. God’s not a Celebrity. We would say, lets magnify the name of the Lord, make it bigger. But in actual fact we can’t do that, why, because His name is as Big as its going to get we can’t make it bigger. Listen, God’s greatness is not dependant of my opinion or your opinion or anybody’s opinion of Him. Our Praise and our Worship doesn’t affect or change God’s status or His Greatness or His goodness. The only thing that can change is MY OPINION of who He really is, my understanding of His Glory.
The word Glory in Hebrew is Kabod – means WEIGHT
So the GLORY of God, speaks of the WEIGHT of who He is. See, in the Bible times, the value of something was measured by its weight. God’s Glory is connected to the worthiness of His Grace and His Love and His Goodness... every attribute that makes God who He is.
In 1 Cor. 10:31Paul says:
“Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
(1Cor 10:31)
Wait a second Paul, do you mean to say I have to do everything to God’s Glory? Isn’t that a bit too much? Even when I drink water? How do I even do that? Imagine Neil saying something like that. We would all say his got issues. His got an identity crisis.
I can assure you God doesn’t have issues and He definitely doesn’t have an identity crisis.
So why must we Glorify Him in everything we do?
Well lets Flip the script.
Remember it’s the Glory of God, the full weight of who He is, that holds everything together. The sun, the air we breathe, the fact that the earth is spinning and gravity is keeping us safely on the ground is all thanks to His Glory. It’s His Glory that’s keeping us alive.
What would happen if His Glory is only available to us now and then?
This air thing is overrated Let me skip it for tomorrow. We would die in an instant!
So the Glory of God is also connected to His faithfulness and His consistency. --- “His mercies are new every morning!”
Every morning when you wake up and the sun is shining outside, its actually busy shouting out and declaring Gods Glory.
There is scripture for that:
“The heavens declare the glory of God” (Psa 19:1a NKJV)
It goes further to describe the SUN as a picture of Gods Glory.
Just like God, the sun is a life giving light. And yet the rays of the Sun is so intense that its also an unapproachable light. Before Jesus Christ, that was precisely every man and every woman’s fate. No access to God’s Glory.
That’s why He SAID to Moses, Moses you can’t see the fullness of my Glory and live. What God did was He covered the Face of Moses as He passed by and only allowed Him to see His Glory from behind.
Moses could only see a Small portion of God’s Glory. Still that Small portion made His face to shine to the extent that the other people couldn’t look at Moses, his face was shining to brightly. It’s like the moon, I don’t know if you ever experienced the moon when it shines so brightly that you can’t look at it. All that its doing its reflecting the light of the sun.
That’s the reasonwhy we were created, to reflect the Glory of God. The Doxa of Deo.
All of us, then, reflect the glory of the Lord with uncovered faces; and that same glory,
coming from the Lord, who is the Spirit, transforms us into his likeness in an ever
greater degree of glory. (2Cor 3:18)
The Spirit of God is increasing our capacity to reflect even a greater degree of His Glory.
Shekinah Glory
There’s another word that’s used to describe Gods Glory: “Shekinah Glory”
It refers to “God’s dwelling Glory.” His Glory dwelling amongst us.
In time of Moses we see it in the tent of gathering, then in the tabernacle and eventually in the temple.
And then when Jesus is born the presence of Gods Glory dwelling among us, is taken to the highest level.
“The Son reflects God's own glory, and everything about him represents God exactly. He sustains the universe by the mighty power of his command.” (Heb 1:3)
The issue was that God’s Glory came to us in the shape of an ordinary man and so many people missed it.
It was only on the Mount of Trans configuration where Jesus revealed the fullness of His Glory .
“His appearance changed from the inside out, right before their eyes. Sunlight poured from his face. His clothes were filled with light.”
(Mat 17:2)
In Doxa Deo were convinced that God is calling us to make Habakkuk 2:14 a reality.
That our world around us will be impacted in such a way that the Knowledge of the Glory of God... the Doxa of Deo... will increase... because we are living our lives for His Glory!
Col 1:27 “Christ in you, the hope of glory.”
Perhaps you have been missing it also, just like the people in Jesus’s day. Maybe you
aren’t seeing the power of the Hope of Glory living inside of you. Or you’re
wondering, how can it be that His Glory, The Glory that Moses had to look away or die,
The Glory that sustains all life, the Glory of the fullness of His weight, how can it be that
I am the one reflecting THAT GLORY... THAT DOXA of DEO?
Its simple, God is the one doing it (moon doesn’t do anything). God is increasing your
capacity to reflect His great Glory. Its who you are.
Like the moon reflecting light in the darkness of night we’re called to reflect The Doxa of Deo.
