As we learn to do life with God in community, what role do children have in that journey?
Vs 1: The question behind the question.
The question seems to be “What can I do to ensure that I am among the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?”
We may not be asking how we can be the greatest in the kingdom of heaven but it is the same attitude that insists on getting in the last word or trying to make sure others think highly of us or simply thinking of ourselves most often and ahead of others.
Vs 2-3: A surprising example.
They needed to turn their thinking entirely around and, instead of worrying about who is the greatest in the kingdom, they should become like this little child.
Thoughts of who is greatest or most important in the way the disciples are thinking are contrary to what it even means to exist in God’s kingdom.
Vs 4: If you want to see greatness…
Jesus pointed to and lifted up the child’s obvious posture of humility as what greatness in the kingdom looked like.
Genuine humility is the measure of greatness in the kingdom of heaven and small children are essential in teaching us this profoundly important lesson and serve as constant reminders and examples of kingdom living.
The false assumption that still frequently drives our attitude and approach to children is that they have nothing to offer adults when it comes to real worship or kingdom living.
While children do need the guidance and instruction of adults, being present with children is essential to our own spiritual formation and ability to experience life in the kingdom of heaven.
If we think about the message that Jesus is communicating in this passage we looked at, we can clearly see that we adults have a desperate need to be with and learn from children.
When adults allow ourselves to see the world – to see the kingdom of heaven – through the eyes of a child we are inevitably transformed.
