No Physical Adultery
This is the most obvious understanding of this commandment is certainly the intended understanding of the original hearers. The message is simple, straightforward, and concise: DON'T.
And while the Don't is critical, the WHY gives us great insight and strength to follow through with the commandment. When we better understand the covenant marriage God created and intends for His followers, committing to the Don't becomes part of our worship of God.

No Mental Adultery
In Matthew 5, Jesus raises the adultery bar, and teaches his disciples that sin in the heart is just as sinful as flesh. Once again, it is critical to know the WHY behind this truth.
In teaching His followers that adultery in the heart and mind violate the commandment, Jesus helps us to understand the pattern of sin and process of relationship. Sin begins as temptation in our hearts and minds. If temptation is not dealt with in this stage, it bears fruit as sin. Nip it in the bud!
Likewise, Jesus teaches us that relationships are affected by what transpires in the heart, for where our heart is there also is our treasure.

No Spiritual Adultery
There is a third prohibition of adultery...spiritual adultery. We often call it idolatry. But as Hosea teaches us, the pain and consequences of spiritual adultery is devastating. As believers, we have been pledged to Christ. The church is His bride, and when we chase after the world we are committing spiritual adultery against our Lord.
