Welcome!

Welcome to Community Bible Church! Since our inception in 1990, our purpose has been to “reach, teach and help people in Jesus’ name,” because of the vision Jesus gave us in the Great Commission: “Go into all the world making disciples and baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” We are passionate about the mission and vision the Lord has given us. In our house, we initiate and celebrate life change in Jesus’ name. By providing opportunities for members to mature, minister, and go on mission, we help them live with eternal purpose.

If you are a first time guest, we invite you to text "Guest" to (210) 762-4747. Join us in taking the gospel to the whole world!
C.S. Lewis said it best when he stated: humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less. Therefore, in the effort to live a life of irresistible influence as winsome, how does one choose to develop a virtue that is designed to give, not gain?
Teaching Points:

I. The Height of Humility:“Clothe” (Vs. 5)
- Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5

a. Incarnation: Took on Flesh (John 1:14, Philippians 2:1-9)
- And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14
- So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 2 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4 Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name. Philippians 2:1-9

b. Demonstration: Took on Fabric (John 13:1-5)
- Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. 2 During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, 3 Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, 4 rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. 5 Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. John 13:1-5

c. Confrontation: Took on Fame (Mark 9:33-35)
- And they came to Capernaum. And when he was in the house he asked them, "What were you discussing on the way?" 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest. 35 And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, "If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all." Mark 9:33-35

II. The Honesty in Humility: “all of you” & “God opposes” (Vs. 5)
- Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5

a. Pinnacle of Pride: Begins with Covetousness (Isaiah 14:13-14)
- You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far reaches of the north; 14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.' Isaiah 14:13-14

b. Peril of Pride: Belittles Contentment (Genesis 3:1-6, 1 John 2:16)
- Now the serpent was more crafty than any other beast of the field that the Lord God had made.He said to the woman, "Did God actually say, 'You shall not eat of any tree in the garden'?" 2 And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees in the garden, 3 but God said, 'You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree that is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" 4 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not surely die. 5 For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." 6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate. Genesis 3:1-6
- And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade." John 2:16

c. Problem of Pride: Benefits are Costly (Proverbs 3:34)
- Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble he gives favor. Proverbs 3:34

III. The Heart of Humility:“Humble yourselves” & “under the mighty hand of God” (Vs. 6)
- Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. 1 Peter 5:6

a. Submission of the Will: Recognition of Grace (John 3:30)
- He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30

b. Sentiment of your Worth: Redefined for Glory (Ephesians 2:10)
- For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

c. Spirit’s internal Work: Revelation of Godliness (Galatians 5:22-26)
- But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another. Galatians 5:22-26

IV. The Honor from Humility: “the proper time he may exalt you” (Vs. 6)
- Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you. 1 Peter 5:6

a. Patient in Waiting: “kairos” is not referencing time, but transformation.

b. Purpose in Wording: “Humility comes before Honor”
i. - The fear of the Lord is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor. Proverbs 15:33
ii. - He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from the Lord. Proverbs 18:22

Discussion Questions: “The Greatest”
1 Peter 5:5-6

Getting Started
C.S. Lewis said it best when he stated: “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.” Therefore, in the effort to live a life of irresistible influence as winsome, how does one choose to develop a virtue that is designed to give, not gain?

Who in your life has modeled humility? What did it look like?

Going Deeper

I. The Height of Humility:“Clothe” (v. 5)
a. Incarnation: Took on Flesh (John 1:14, Philippians 2:1-9)
b. Demonstration: Took on Fabric (John 13:1-5)
c. Confrontation: Took on Fame (Mark 9:33-35)

These three ideas of incarnation, demonstration, and confrontation help us to understand humility in the three significant ways it challenges us. First, it helps us remember who we are. We are people of flesh. We often live as if we will never die, yet we are temporary and mortal in these bodies. Second, it teaches us that humility means service to others. We choose to take off the bib that says, “Feed me and take care of me” and replace it with an apron that signifies “I am here to serve you.” Finally, it removes our temptation to pursue fame, because it is impossible to be arrogant when we are on our knees washing the feet of others.

Which of these 3 aspects of humility do you most need to understand and embrace, and why?

II. The Honesty in Humility: “all of you” & “God opposes” (v. 5)
a. Pinnacle of Pride: Begins with Covetousness (Isaiah 14:13-14)
b. Peril of Pride: Belittles Contentment (Genesis 3:1-6, 1 John 2:16)
c. Problem of Pride: Benefits are Costly (Proverbs 3:34)

Isaiah 14 tells us that Satan’s fall began with his pride.
Genesis 3 tells us that Adam & Eve’s fall began with pride.
1 John 2 warns us against the pride of life.
Proverbs 3 warns us that God scorns the prideful.

Taking all four of these passages into consideration, we should be staggered by the implications of what our pride can do to destroy our lives.

Share with us about a time when your pride caused pain to you or someone you care about.

If you were able to humble yourself, how did you see God bring about a good resolution?

III. The Heart of Humility: “Humble yourselves” & “under the mighty hand of God” (v. 6)
a. Submission of the Will: Recognition of Grace (John 3:30)
b. Sentiment of your Worth: Redefined for Glory (Ephesians 2:10)
c. Spirit’s internal Work: Revelation of Godliness (Galatians 5:22-26)

John the Baptist knew his place. In talking about Jesus, John said, “He must increase, I must decrease.” What does this look like in your life?
How do you make much of Jesus?

In Ephesians 2:10, the apostle Paul shares with us the amazing truth that we are God’s masterpieces, created in Christ Jesus for good works which He has prepared for us to do. So, instead of trying to make ourselves famous by how we perform in the world, how does this truth help us see our true value in God’s eyes?

When we humble ourselves, the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22-23) can be on full display in our lives. Which of these do people most often see in you?

IV. The Honor from Humility: “the proper time he may exalt you” (v. 6)
a. Patient in Waiting: “kairos” is not referencing time, but transformation.
b. Purpose in Wording: “Humility comes before Honor”
i. Proverbs 15:33
ii. Proverbs 18:22

The bible talks of both ‘chronos’ time and ‘kairos’ time. Chronos refers to linear time, like minutes, hours, weeks, etc. Kairos refers to a unique event in which something special was to happen. It comes from a word that means ‘when things come to a head’ requiring decisive action.

As we practice the virtue of humility, it will be up to God to decide when He is going to exalt us for it. We don’t get to control the outcome, but we can trust that God will reward and exalt us at the perfect time that advances His work in the world. If we chase honor, we will rarely find it. But if we chase humility, honor will often find us in God’s perfect timing.

Share with us about a time when you saw God honor someone because of their humility. Was it obvious to everyone why they deserved that honor? Why?
