Lots of people WANT to believe in God, but something is holding them back. Often, it's not God; it's the distorted view of God we have.
When we say "religion," we're not talking about Christianity. We're talking about man-made rules we use to try and please God.
Jesus said not to be like the Pharisees who were performing on the outside, but were not following God on the inside.
In the OT, after Ezra and Nehemiah, religious leaders with good intentions saw God's people breaking His laws, so they created more rules to make sure nobody broke the law. These became known as the "fence laws."
