Plain Truth: Jesus stood alone so we could stand in freedom.
1) Only Jesus can stand alone between life and death.
2) Jesus stood alone so we would never be alone.
3) Jesus’ resurrection and our repentance invokes the Father’s favor.

Life Group Lesson for the Week of April 1, 2018

The Christ of God has existed from the beginning, according to Colossians 1:15 and John 1:1. The LORD’s Christ is on every page of Scripture. For example, Christ traveled with Moses in the wilderness and brought fire down for Elijah. But when Christ came into this world as a man, His birth and new name was announced by heaven both to His mother, Mary and to Joseph –

…to Mary: “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name Him Jesus” (Luke 1:31).

and to Joseph: …You are to name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21).

As a man, Jesus perfectly fulfilled His Heavenly Father’s purpose. On several occasions God even spoke from heaven confirming Jesus as His Son. One time Jesus took three of His disciples up on a high mountain and these disciples were given a glimpse of Christ in His glory and power! One of them even writes about it later as an older man (see 2 Peter 1:16-18). But for now,

Read Luke 9:28-36

“About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. And as He was praying, the appearance of His face was transformed, and His clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared and began talking with Jesus. They were glorious to see. And they were speaking about His exodus from this world, which was about to be fulfilled in Jerusalem… Then a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, my Chosen One. Listen to Him.’ When the voice finished Jesus was there alone. They didn’t tell anyone at that time what they had seen” (vv28-31,35-36).

1. After God’s glory was lifted from the mountain, “Jesus was there alone.” Although throughout the New Testament Jesus often refers to Himself as ‘the Son of Man’, He (Christ) is also the Son of God. How are both titles – Son of Man and Son of God – accurate and specific?

What does each title speak to you personally?

Clearly, God has been on mission from the beginning. Jesus, the Son of God, was born into this world to carry out an assignment that only He could accomplish. He came to heal, proclaim the Good News of God’s love, and point to the coming Kingdom. But Jesus Christ did more than show the way to salvation, He became the Way to salvation when He took our place in death by dying on the cross – and ultimately, rising from death on the first Easter Sunday!

2. Jesus stands alone for you. When you come to Christ, He alone has the power to rescue you from sin and eternal separation from God. You don’t have to keep hoping that you are good enough for heaven, because you aren’t. No one is. But Christ’s death clears your sin record and His resurrection saves you if you will trust Him today. Will you do that? Why not personally invite Jesus Christ into your life right now? God loves you.
