This week we will be looking at Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. As Georges mentioned in his sermon, “The parade of victory, of the kingdom, is the parade of death. You win by dying.” Jesus won by dying. It was His death that paid the price for the sins of the world. Now we all know this, and that's all well and good for Jesus, but what about us? Do we win by dying? Yes. And I'm not talking about the obvious we die physically and go to heaven type of dying either “although that certainly is true”. What I am talking about and what we will be discussing is the dying we have to do every day to win. The death of self. In order to live life in Gods Kingdom we have to take up our crosses and follow Jesus. We must kill self. This is what we mean when we talk about humility. It is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less. It is becoming more and more other people oriented. This is the polar opposite of what the world teaches. The world says you are number one on your own priority list and if you don't look out for yourself who will? The world says you need better then what you have, so why not go out and get it? You deserve it don't you? God says if you stop focusing on yourself and concentrate on Him and those around you He will take care of the rest. I promise you the less you focus on yourself the happier you will be. Doesn't sound right does it? That’s because we have been taught the opposite. We have been taught that if we have the right car, house, wife, lifestyle, bank account, etc... we will be happy. Lies. While these things can provide a brief moment of happiness, it is always fleeting and then you need the next, newest, better thing. A never ending vicious cycle of chasing what we call the “American dream”. The truth is that we already possess the only thing that is capable of providing us with lasting joy and happiness. Jesus. The problem results from the fact that we seldom rely on Him for this. In fact I find it rather ironic that for many of us our prayer life consists of asking for the things that the world says we need to be happy. I am especially guilty of this. :( I once heard a much wiser man than I say that “the road to life is filled with things that make you feel like you’re dying, while the road to death is filled with things that make you feel alive”. I have found this to be astonishingly accurate. It is the little deaths each day, the deaths to self that will bring us closer and closer to our objective. Christ-likeness. In this particular discipline we must follow the master of humility, Christ Himself. Jesus did the unthinkable, the ludicrous, and the most unbelievable thing you can imagine. He gave up his form as God and came to earth as a man, and not just a man, but a baby. Why did He do this? To serve and not be served. To die for people who would for the most part never love Him. Inconceivable. Utterly ridiculous. Would you ever do such a thing? If you grow into His likeness you would. I don't know if this even appeals to you, but I desire this very much. I desire to be more and more like Him. I desire the peace, joy, contentment, and satisfaction that true humility brings. I desire the little deaths that lead to righteousness. As we approach this upcoming Easter Sunday, let's spend this week practicing being in His presence. As we have discussed before, to know Him is to love Him, and the only way to know Him is to spend time with Him. I will be praying for us all. This week I ask only two questions per day. How does the passage show humility, and how do we do the same?
