Set the Course
Pastor Rachel McConachy
God has called us to run a race
We have been given purpose & hope
God wants us to win & succeed in his plans
1 Corinthians 9:24-25 (NIV)
24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever.
You can run your own race
You can lay aside every wound
You can keep going
The past is not irrelevant, but it doesn’t need to determine your today or your tomorrow
Hebrews 12:1 (TPT)
1As for us, we have all of these great witnesses who encircle us like clouds. So we must let go of every wound that has pierced us and the sin we so easily fall into. Then we will be able to run life’s marathon race with passion and determination, for the path has been already marked out before us.
Extra Notes
Samuel 14:6-14 (NLT)
6“Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!”
7“Do what you think is best,” the armor bearer replied. “I’m with you completely, whatever you decide.” 8“All right then,” Jonathan told him. “We will cross over and let them see us. 9If they say to us, ‘Stay where you are or we’ll kill you,’ then we will stop and not go up to them.
10But if they say, ‘Come on up and fight,’ then we will go up. That will be the lord’s sign that he will help us defeat them.” 11When the Philistines saw them coming, they shouted, “Look! The Hebrews are crawling out of their holes!” 12Then the men from the outpost shouted to Jonathan, “Come on up here, and we’ll teach you a lesson!” “Come on, climb right behind me,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer, “for the lord will help us defeat them!”
13So they climbed up using both hands and feet, and the Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor bearer killed those who came behind them. 14They killed some twenty men in all, and their bodies were scattered over about half an acre.
You can trust God as you run your own race
What do you do when your course changes
And it wasn’t what you were expecting
I Samuel 13:13-14 (NKJV)
13And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you. For now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
How do we handle this?
Where is the path to get me back on track?
God is with you, you can trust him
What does Jonathan do?
Great strength comes from knowing our own race & running it with confidence in our God
Great strength comes from
trusting god in the wilderness
Lay aside every wound & weight
We can never underestimate the
strength of the Holy Spirit in our lives
I Samuel 23:16-17 (NKJV)
16Then Jonathan, Saul’s son, arose and went to David in the woods and strengthened his hand in God. 17And he said to him, “Do not fear, for the hand of Saul my father shall not find you. You shall be king over Israel, and I shall be next to you. Even my father Saul knows that.”
Keep going
The past is not irrelevant, but it doesn’t need to determine your today or your tomorrow
Isaiah 40:31 (TPT)
31But those who wait for Yahweh’s grace
will experience divine strength.
They will rise up on soaring wings and fly like eagles,
run their race without growing weary,
and walk through life without giving up.
He is a lamp for your feet & a light to your path
he is the road in the wilderness
