Deeper Theme: God's Principles of Progress
Review of Joshua 3:1-17

Question: What was God’s next command to Joshua?

Joshua 4:1-3

Select twelve men to take up twelve stones from the middle of the river
- where the priest are standing.

So Joshua did as the Lord commanded. Joshua 4: 4-5
Question: What did these twelve stones become, and why?

Joshua 4:6-7

The stones became a sign , a memorial to the sons of Israel forever, in order that future generations would know what God had done.

So the sons of Israel did as Joshua commanded. Joshua 4:8
Question: How many memorials were set up that day?

Joshua 4: 9, 19-24

Two memorials were set up: one in the middle of the river where the
priests stood and a second where the sons of Israel camped that night, in Gilgal.
Question: Why would these stones stand out from any other stone around the river?
How should we relate to memorials of God’s deeds today?

a. e.g. Sabbath, Communion, the Cross, Christmas, Passover, etc…

God knew His people, knew how soon they would forget His great works of deliverance for them unless provision be made for keeping this great event in mind. Future generations must not be permitted to forget God’s leading. Even so today “we have nothing to fear for the future, except as we shall forget the way the Lord has led us, and His teaching in our past history” (LS 196).

Question: When did God fulfill His promise to exalt Joshua?

Joshua 3: 7
Joshua 4: 10-18

By the end of the day God had exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel,
and they revered him all the days of his life.
Other than relating God’s instructions how exactly Joshua “exalted”, or is that God’s idea of exaltation?

What then is the highest position a Christian should seek to reach?
