The Real Jesus | Sacrifice Versus Selfishness | Kip Nanninga
People have always had strong opinions about Jesus. From “heretic” to “prophet” to “Son of God”, beliefs have always covered the spectrum. Join us as we explore the beginning of the great debate, as recorded in the Gospel of John…and see why billions through the centuries have decided he is the only Savior worth their lives.

Welcome to Mission Hills!
Mission Hills is a church family—a family who wants to extend to you the same love, hope, and joy that we have received. We know that we cannot be all things to all people. But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!
If you are a first time guest, we would love to meet you! Stop by the Welcome Center for a free drink at Peakview!

Easter 2018 | Baggage Check
No one gets through life without picking up some baggage along the way — from heartaches to hurts to guilt for what we’ve done or failed to do. It gets pretty heavy. In fact, the baggage we accumulate can be downright unbearable. This Easter, we’ll explore the only way to check that baggage — to hand it off to someone who can take care of it in a way we cannot. We can learn how to start living a life free from the burden of all our baggage. God offers this hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

SOME CONTEXT
Before chapter 12, we first need some context in chapter 11:55-57 which begins to build the tension in the story.
What is going on?
· Passover is coming in 6 days,
· Everyone is coming to the city,
· Mi’vek (Ceremonial Cleansing Ritual to enter Temple), and
· Crowd & Religious Leaders want to see Jesus.

When we reject selfishness and choose sacrifice, powerful things begin to happen!
When we reject sacrifice and choose selfishness, we miss powerful moments.
When we reject selfishness and choose to sacrifice, a legacy begins.
Four words describe the legacy of Mary – She will be remembered.
Four words describe the legacy of Judas – He was a thief.

“Before we can trust Christ, we first have to trust a Christian. We watch their lives closely and see what is really important to them, what they want to leave behind, what matters most.” -- Barna Institute
“God creates us free, free to be selfish, but He adds a mechanism that will penetrate our selfishness and wake us up to the presence of others in this world, and that mechanism is called sacrifice.” -- C.S. Lewis
When we reject accusations and choose bravery, powerful things begin to happen.
v. John 12:4-6
These words show us two things: how expensive the ointment really was and how suicidal it is when our hearts don’t match the worth of Jesus. Judas will eventually die at his own hands. And he is paving the way right now.

Mary broke 4 big Jewish customs as a woman, in front of at least 15 men. Violated what a Jewish women were supposed to do to worship Jesus:
· A slave was the only person to wash a man’s feet.
· Never touch the dirty feet of a man – degrading, humbling.
· A woman was not permitted to speak to man at dinner.
· Never let your hair down unless for your husband - your crown or glory.

When we follow the One who sacrificed it all, powerful things begin to happen.
