Last week...

Last week, Pastor Keith Miller talked about our firm foundation.
Last week we all saw the home-going of Billy Graham--probably the most well-known evangelist of our time and maybe ever, simply by the sheer number of people he was able to reach.

If you ever heard him preach, every one of his messages were simple and basic. For an evangelist, he was not known for being very demonstrative or fiery, but his message was plain and clear for all who heard it.

He would emphasize God’s love for us and would make sure everyone who heard it was ready for the day when we would meet God.

The one truth that seems to be evident today is that we really have no guarantee of our next breath.
Back to our question, are we ready?

Looking at the most famous or popular account of His return, the book of Matthew tells us...
Jewish custom for weddings was that the bridegroom would have his attendants (usually 10) go to the bride’s house and call for her and her attendants. (again, usually 10). The attendants were there as witnesses to the vows.

Back in Ruth, we see the example.
The brides attendants were to keep watch for the men approaching and when they would see them, they would alert the bride and then go out of the house to meet the men.

After the men collected the women, they would return to the bridegroom’s house for the wedding feast.
We have 5 women who had listened to God’s word and obeyed and lived by it and 5 who heard it but didn’t obey or live by it.

The Bible refers to the church as the bride of Christ. That means we need to be waiting in anticipation of the bridegroom coming.

That means waiting, listening to and obeying God’s word. To live by it.

All 10 women were waiting, but not all 10 were ready.
All 10 had enough oil for the present.
They all had enough to make a good show for right now. They all had enough to make a profession of being a bridesmaid. They had enough to make everyone think they were ready.

But only 5 of them really were.

Do we make a profession of being ready, thinking that we are, but in reality, when the time comes, we know we’re not?

The 5 foolish were just living for today, enjoying the pleasure and blessings of now, but did not prepare themselves for the coming of the bridegroom.

They were not planning for their future.
Since he didn’t come when THEY thought he was coming, they assumed they had more time.

Up until that point, they had plenty of time to get the extra oil, they knew he would be coming soon, but they were only in it for what would happen right now, not in the future.

Do we live and trust God for the here and now? Or are we preparing ourselves for the inevitable?
They were all asleep, with no indication of his coming.

They were awoken by surprise. Sound familiar?
We know Jesus could come back at any moment, but his return will be a surprise to all. Are we ready for it?
The foolish ones did not plan or get prepared for his coming.

They were doing the same things outwardly that everyone else was doing, but inward, they were not ready.

The ones that were ready were the ones who lived their lives right. The ones who weren’t ready all of a sudden now wanted to live right.

They did their own thing up to that point, but now that the time is here, they want another chance.
“Give us your oil, in other words, put in a good word for us.” ~ Matthew Henry
Let us have what you have. And let the bridegroom know we are all one family. They were confident in their current condition.

They believed that what they had was sufficient for what was necessary ahead.

Do we have what is required for Jesus’s return on do we think that our own ways and thoughts are sufficient?
The foolish ones believed that they could be ready because someone else was prepared.

Are you ready?

You are not ready because your spouse is ready. You are not ready because your mom or dad are believers. Or your grandmother is ready.

Everyone in your household can be prepared, but that does nothing for making you ready.

Everyone has to be prepared for themselves. Everyone has to come to faith in Christ.
There will be no time to get ready then. It’ll be too late.
Those who are ready, will go to be with Jesus, those that aren’t, it will be too late for them.

And not only too late, but it will also signify the end of your chances to get to heaven.
It will be too late, because the Bible teaches that if you hear the gospel here and reject it, you will NOT be able to get saved after the rapture.
Jesus ends this parable with this warning:
In other words, be ready.

Are we ready?

Are YOU ready?
