What comes to your mind when you hear the words “obey Jesus”?
But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does. James 1:25
…effectual doer… One who goes to work doing what they have learned; performing, acting on or obeying.
…blessed... Supremely blessed, fortunate, well off.
…in what he does. In his doing or performing especially of the law of God.
In what ways will we be fortunate or well off?
…truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death John 8:51
o Obedience to Jesus leads us to a life in which death is no longer the defining reality.
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mind and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. Matthew 7:24
o As we live life according the way of Jesus we are anchoring ourselves to a secure, constant, immovable hope.
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me- put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. Philippians 4:9
o Obedience to the teaching of Jesus brings about a clear awareness of God Himself being with us in such a way that fills us with peace.
…and receive from him anything we ask, because we keep his commands and do what pleases him. 1 John 3:22
o When we put into practice Jesus’ commands, we put ourselves before God in such a way we are in sync with his heart and character. That is when God becomes particularly responsive to us as we express our needs and desires to Him.
He who has my commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by my Father and I will love him and will disclose Myself to Him. John 14:21
o It is through obeying Jesus commandments our deep desire to know with great certainty that God is present with us, active in our lives in powerful and redemptive ways.
Obeying Jesus doesn’t restrict or diminish your life; it gives you life that is brilliant and beautiful.
G2 Step: Identify and write down one or two things that you currently believe about obeying Jesus. It doesn’t matter if they are true or false at this point. What matters is that you figure out what you believe. Once you do identify what you believe about obeying Jesus you can either affirm and solidify what is true or reject and replace what is false.
*One way to help identify what you believe is to write out the words “Obey Jesus” or say them out loud and linger in thought over them. Your beliefs/narratives will usually come to the surface if you linger long enough over the phrase or thought.
Authenticity among us will be one of the most powerful witnesses we have to those around us.
