The Way of a Disciple - An Unlikely Disciple

The Way of a Disciple - An Unlikely Disciple

If we were going to build a winning team – friends, a sports team, a workforce, we would want to find and recruit the best of the best. Jesus didn’t do that. If He were building a “winning team” of men and women for His Kingdom He would have chosen the best of the best. He would have gone to the Temple and chosen the High priest and others, the Pharisee’s and the scribes, maybe the elite wealthy business men like the one where Lazarus sat outside his gate or the rich young ruler. He might have chosen the politically powerful like Herod and even Pilate. But He didn’t. The problem is that these people often have a hard time seeing their need for Jesus. In a worldly sense they have all they need and don’t want to give up what they have to follow Jesus. Those who have much have a hard time seeing their spiritual need. Many trust in riches and more trust in a self-righteousness by being and doing religious or good works. When Jesus built a team for His Kingdom He went to common uneducated fisherman, the crooked and despised tax collectors, the “out-there zealots”, women and even prostitutes. This is the story of Jesus delivering and making a disciple of maybe the most unlikely of all!
