The Bible was written by specific people to specific people in specific places and within a specific culture. In other words, the Bible is written for us but it was not written to us. However, because the Bible in God’s breathed, because every word is inspired by God, God is the Author behind the authors. Because of this, while the human authors understood what they were writing in one way, we recognize that since God is the Author behind the authors, the meaning of scripture is far deeper and more dynamic than any of us can fully wrap our minds around. That being said, one of our convictions is that the whole Old Testament is actually preparing us for, anticipating, foreshadowing the life and ministry of Jesus. So for Lent this season – that’s what we’ll be exploring – how long before Jesus was born, the OT was foreshadowing, preparing, anticipating his arrival and if we have eyes to see and ears to hear, we can see this foreshadowing throughout the whole story of God.

When God calls Abram to Himself in Genesis 12, the calling functions simultaneously as a sending. God calls Abram in order to send Abram to a place he’s never been and to a land he’s never seen. If Abram will do this, God will not only bless Abram, but God will bless the world through Abram. Though Abram must leave everything he’s ever known and has no idea where he’ll end up, his discomfort will yield good news for many. Flash forward many, many years, and the ministry of Jesus takes the calling of Abram even further. Not only does Jesus call disciples to Himself, he equips them with power and authority to do what he does and then sends them out into the world for the sake of the world. In the life and ministry of Jesus, the mission of God is heightened and focused and in the same way God sent Abram and Jesus sent the disciples, we, as God’s redeemed children, are sent out in the world, to the world, for the world.
How do you feel about a God who is more interested in calling you out of hiding so that He can bless people through you rather than blessing you with a life of comfort, convenience, and certainty?
The smallest crack in the door is all God needs to slip in and change our lives by changing our hearts. If we give God an inch he’ll take it a mile in the best sort of way.
Sometimes God removes even the most basic ‘necessities’ from us because it’s just as easy to hide behind what we have as it is to hide behind what we lack. Jesus removed what they did have so that what we have or what we lack can never be an excuse for joining Jesus in his mission to love the world back to God.
Next Steps:
1. Listen to Stephanie Gretzinger’s “Out of Hiding”. It’s a powerful, beautiful song reflecting God’s desire to call us out of hiding and into relationship with Him for the sake of the world.
2. If you haven’t already done so, fast something for the rest of Lent. No, you giving up candy or social media for a short season isn’t going to change the world, but it might change you, even if just a little. And honestly that’s all God needs to slip in and begin changing us by changing our hearts.
3. Spend some time reflecting on Luke 9:1-6. What information, resources, stuff, people have you been hiding behind? Make a list of these things and ask God to help you follow him out of hiding for the sake of others. (Luke 10:1-12 has a similar sending story if you want to go deeper and compare/contrast the two)
Go in the power, love and authority of God for the glory of God and the sake of the world.
