Legacy: Honor the Past, Embrace the Future, Passing the Baton
Today we’re wrapping up our series called “Legacy: Honor the Past...Embrace the Future.” We can’t embrace the future unless we honor the past. We’ve talked about how there are things we hold onto--this great heritage of faith--and how there are things we need to let go of that hold us back in our walk with God. Last Sunday we talked about moving forward in this great legacy of faith. And today we’re going to take a look at passing on this legacy of faith to others.

Passing the Baton

If passing the baton is that important in a race, imagine how important it is in life. Whether it’s a father trying to pass on what it means to be a man to his son, or a mother trying to pass on the lessons of womanhood to her daughter, we don’t want to drop the baton! And unlike a race, we don’t always get a chance to practice, do we?
Leaving a legacy for future generations...
1. Legacies are passed through relationships
1. Legacies are passed through relationships
The legacy you pass on to your children, the legacy we pass on as a church, the legacy of faith you and I pass on to others we work with and hang out with--those legacies are passed on through relationships!

2. Legacies are passed through stories
What are parables? Stories of everyday life that teach us about God’s call on our lives. The psalmist, the one who wrote Ps. 78, is saying, listen to my stories, things that our fathers have told us! Stories are a powerful way of remembering, recounting, and relaying truth.

The problem is so many people underestimate the value of relationships. Who is it that you’re investing your life in? Who’s investing his or her life in yours?
Challenge
I challenge you to think this week about two things:
(1) Give thanks for those who passed the baton of faith to you. Remember. Honor them. Celebrate. Maybe it’s your parents or grandparents. Maybe a friend at work. A teacher.
(2) YOU pass the baton of faith to others. Yes, to your children if you have children. But also to your friends, your co-workers, your neighbors. Remember, legacies are passed on through relationships and through story.
