The Real Jesus | The Excessive Life

People have always had strong opinions about Jesus. From “heretic” to “prophet” to “Son of God”, beliefs have always covered the spectrum. Join us as we explore the beginning of the great debate, as recorded in the Gospel of John…and see why billions through the centuries have decided he is the only Savior worth their lives.

Welcome to Mission Hills!

Mission Hills is a church family—a family who wants to extend to you the same love, hope, and joy that we have received. We know that we cannot be all things to all people. But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!

If you are a first time guest, we would love to meet you! Stop by the Welcome Center for a free drink at Peakview!

Jesus longs for us to experience a life of excessive good.
Two quick things:

1 // First, a very literal translation of what Jesus says here would be “amen, amen, I tell you.” "Amen" = "truly"
Jesus is saying "pay attention, this isn’t just true, this is really important."

2 // The second thing is that Jesus is continuing his earlier conversation with the Pharisees because he's trying desparately to convince them that he is the real deal.
The point he’s making is that he’s the real deal, the true shepherd.
He gives us three signs of his legitimacy:

1 // He enters through the proper opening
2 // The appointed doorkeeper opens the door for him
3 // The sheep respond to his voice.
1 - The true shepherd enters through the proper opening.
Jesus entered the world in exactly the way the Old Testament predicted...so he's the real deal, the true shepherd.
2 - The appointed doorkeeper opens the door for him.
John the Baptist was the doorkeeper that recognized Jesus as the real deal, the true shepherd.
3 - The sheep respond to the true shepherd’s voice.
The huge crowds of Jewish people who responded to Jesus' teaching means that he is the real deal, the true shepherd.
The point of all of this is that Jesus is the real deal, the true shepherd, which is important because only the true shepherd pursues what is best for the sheep.
Jesus is not just pursuing good for us...he also provides access to it. He is the gate to:

1 // Protection - He says “I am the gate, whoever enters through me will be saved.”
Through Jesus we experience God’s protection.

2 // Provision – But notice that he doesn’t just say we enter through him…he also says that we go out through him.
Through Jesus we experience God’s provision.
We have to go through Jesus to find the good life God intended for us.

But the life God intends for us is not just good...
Big Idea: Jesus longs for us to experience a life of excessive good.
Key question: are you experiencing this excessive life Jesus says he came for you to have?

2 things that have to be true for you to experience this excessive life:

1 // The excessive life is only experienced in relationship with Jesus. In that relationship we also have to:
- Become familiar with his voice.
- Develop a habit of obedience.

2 // The excessive life isn’t a static gift…it’s a proximity effect.

Jesus longs for us to experience life of excessive good.
Question to wrestle with:

1// How regularly am I experiencing the excessive life Jesus promises?
2// What is one concrete step I'm going to take to start experiencing the excessive life?
a. Start my relationship with Jesus
b. Invest in my relationship with Jesus?
c. Find a way to start living missionally with Jesus?
Jesus is talking about a new rhythm of life that can only be found in him.

Jesus is inviting us into a new rhythm of life that revolves around provision and protection.
The abundant life that Jesus offers us is an exhilarating rhythm of provision and protection.
But why isn’t everyone who has chosen to follow Jesus experiencing this exhilarating rhythm of provision and protection? REASONS:

1 // We’re not living according to his leading.
- Maybe you don’t have a relationship with him.
- Maybe you haven’t put in the time to become familiar with his voice.
- Maybe you haven’t developed a habit of obedience.
- Maybe you’re trying to be a lone-sheep.

2 // The Kingdom has come, but it’s also still coming.
Questions to Consider:

1 // In what area of my life am I most struggling to live in his rhythm of protection and provision?

2 // What is one step I will take this week to start living according to his leading?
