Discouragement: loss of confidence or enthusiasm, dispiritedness, depression, dejection

If it's not dealt with, discouragement can effect health, or whether or not you pursue a dream, or whether you complete a goal.

Unchecked, discouragement can destroy individuals, families, churches, or communities.

You don’t drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there. Edwin Cole
How David Handled Discouragement

Then Samuel consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice…. Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The Lord has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.” 1 Samuel 16:5, 10-11

The Nobody - Nobody Noticed

“For God sees not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7

Encouragement: We won’t be overlooked by God. Man may disregard you, but God's standards of judgment are different.
The Somebody - Everybody Blamed

When David and his men reached Ziklag, they found it destroyed by fire and their wives and sons and daughters taken captive. So David and his men wept aloud until they had no strength left to weep. David’s two wives had been captured – Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail, the widow of Nabal of Carmel. David was greatly distressed because the men were talking of stoning him; each one was bitter in spirit because of his sons and daughters. But David found strength in the Lord his God. 1 Samuel 30:3-6

David’s Response:
--David found strength in the Lord
--Inquired of the Lord
--"Bring me the Ephod"
In times of discouragement:
--Turn to the One who will never turn on you
--Never turn on those who turn on you
--Turn together on the enemy

The Kingdom - Where Everybody Mattered

David asked, “Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” Now there was a servant of Saul’s household named Ziba. They summoned him to appear before David, and the king said to him, “Are you Ziba?” “At your service,” he replied. The king asked, “Is there no one still alive from the house of Saul to whom I can show God’s kindness?” Ziba answered the king, “There is still a son of Jonathan; he is lame in both feet.” “Where is he?” the king asked. 2 Samuel 9:1-4
