2017 is almost in the books! Time flies. The New Year begins tomorrow. Only 365 days til’ Christmas.
Let’s go into the New Year with great hope and expectation because of Jesus! We can depend upon Him and His power moment by moment because He lives in us. He is sovereign over our future; He is in control. We don’t know what 2018 holds for us. But we do know that God is in charge of every aspect of our lives.
I don’t know how you would rate 2017. A great year, many victories. A hard year. Perhaps the loss of a loved one. Maybe you are entering this New Year with some apprehension. Perhaps with great expectation for what God is going to do.
Either way the story we are going to look at this morning will encourage and strengthen you to step out in faith!

The disciples had just witnessed the feeding of 5,000 people. You can double or triple that number if you add the women and children that were there. This is an amazing miracle. But the Bible says that they didn’t really understand it. Jesus sends them to the other side of the lake and dismisses the crowd. Then He goes to a mountain to pray. The disciples don’t make much progress; they are only a few miles into their trip.
The Bible says the problem was that the wind and waves were hindering their progress. This is probably another supernatural storm. Jesus sees them struggling to row against the wind and waves and comes walking to them on the water. It is about 3:00 in the morning! We are familiar with this story. We usually focus on Peter walking on the water. But only Matthew mentions this.
How can this story help us as we get ready for 2018? Here are some powerful truths:
1) GOD IS WITH YOU NO MATTER WHAT LIFE BRINGS...Joshua 1:9

“God’s end is to enable me to see that He can walk on the chaos of my life just now.” Oswald Chambers
Fear is a great big faith killer. Fear is the opposite of faith. Fear says what I don’t want to happen is going to happen. The disciples were afraid. The Bible is full of commands not to fear because fear cripples us. It causes us to sink as it did Peter!

God is constantly leading us forward into faith. As we go into the New Year here are some challenges to help us accomplish that.
►Purpose in your heart to draw close to God in 2018. Start now with a plan to seek Him, read His Word, and pray.
But it is good for me to draw near to God; I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all Your works. Psalm 73:28 (NKJV)
The closer we draw to God the more we hear His voice and sense His heart.

►Leave your regrets and failures behind!
Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13–14 (NKJV)
God doesn’t remember our sins; He casts them into the sea. Jesus bore our sins on the cross. Don’t go fishing in the sea of forgetfulness!

►Ask God to give you a heart for the lost. Those who don’t know Jesus.
God is passionate about seeking the lost. The closer you draw to Him the more you will want to see people come to Christ.
For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10 (NKJV)
May this next year be the best year of your life!
