Discussion Guide
Main Idea: Though our world’s attractions are seductive, Christ followers are called to worship God and be prepared for the marriage supper of the Lamb.
CONNECTING
With your LIFE group, look through some old magazines. Point out pictures and words that illustrate a desire for power and wealth. How do you see Americans promoting idolatry today?
Read Revelation 17:1-8. Who is the woman? Why is she influential (Rev. 14:8; 16:9)? In what ways do you see a Babylon today living in defiance against God and seduced by prosperity and pleasure?
Read Revelation 17:9-18 and summarize the angel’s meaning of this vision. What might “seven hills”,“eight kings” and “ten horns” represent? What is the future of this woman and what is God’s role in her demise (17:12-18)?
UNDERSTANDING
In Revelation 18 we read responses to Babylon’s fall. Some see seven songs: Song 1 (18:1-3), song 2 (18:4-8), song 3 (18:9-10), song 4 (18:11-17a), song 5 (18:17b-19), song 6 (18:20-24) and song 7 (19:1-4).
Read each one: Why is heaven rejoicing? Why is earth weeping?
How do you feel about our world’s economy, religious life, political power and prosperity unraveling?
Why are suffering Christians encouraged by this chapter? Handel wrote the “Messiah” and “Hallelujah Chorus” based on Revelation 19:1-10. Why do you think Handel was inspired to write the song?
Read Revelation 19:6-10. Contrast the Beast (antichrist) with the Lamb and the prostitute with the bride of Christ. Who is the bride (see Eph. 5:25-27)? How is she to make herself ready? What kind of devotion and commitment does this suggest we have toward Christ? What commitment does Christ have to us?
LIVING
How does the fall of Babylon and rejoicing in heaven give you a greater understanding of God? How does it enlarge your concept of the depravity (sinfulness) of humanity?
How do the defeat of Babylon and the triumph and glory of God affect your view of your problems today? What is one challenge you hope to manage more confidently as a result of this study?
Assignment: Talk with your group: Are you a citizen of “Babylon” or a citizen of heaven? If you are a citizen of heaven, have you given in to the current culture’s anti-God bias in any subtle ways? Take time for silent prayer and ask God to reveal things in your life that keep you from Him.
