His Name Will Be Called - Part 3 - Mighty God

His Name Will Be Called - Part 3 - Mighty God

His Name Will Be Called… It’s Christmastime! This marks the traditional beginning of the Christmas season. And, that includes all the euphoria that goes along with it - all the shopping, the cooking and baking, the planning, the parties, the music, the travel, visits to and from family near and far. As the song says, “it’s the most wonderful time of the year!” But, let's take time right now, at the beginning of this Christmas season, to focus on the fact that the real reason for this season is Jesus! The prophet Isaiah wrote, long before Jesus’ birth, descriptive words about our Messiah. He told us that His name would be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Each of these names paints a clear picture of about Jesus, that baby lying in a manger. On each of the remaining Sunday mornings here at Valley Chapel, we want to examine Isaiah 9:6, each week focusing on one of the marvelous descriptive names of our Lord Jesus Christ. Here is our plan - • Wonderful - November 26th • Counselor - December 3rd • Mighty God - December 10th • Everlasting Father - December 17th • Prince of Peace - December 24th • Emmanuel - December 31st You won’t want to miss a single one of these Christ-centered messages during this year’s Christmas season! Check out the series information on our website here - www.VCAG.org/His-Name/ Sundays at 10:30 Valley Chapel AG 300 Valley Road Clifton, NJ 07013 (973) 278-0953 www.VCAG.org

His Name Will Be Called Wonderful Mighty God

Power. People strive to get it. Things are sold because of it. Too much electricity is called a power surge. Using high-pressure water to clean things is called power-wash. Politically, the party in control of our government is the power party. Cars are often evaluated by how much horse power they have. Our list of things related to power could go on and on and on.

But, no matter what power you may be thinking of, there is One who has greater power than any other. In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet, in telling us the names that Jesus will be called, includes the name “Mighty God.”

This is an interesting compound name - Mighty God. The Hebrew here is “el gibbor,” which literally translated, means that Jesus is the “Mighty Almighty.” He is power exemplified!

Why is Jesus the Mighty Almighty - the Mighty God? Here at Valley Chapel, we are taking this month to examine the names Isaiah uses to describe Jesus. We have already looked at the names “Wonderful” and “Counselor.” This week, we will answer the question, just what makes Jesus to be the Mighty God. I believe there are four very significant reasons why our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is not only wonderful, and our counselor, but He is most definitely the mighty almighty!

Be sure to join us this Sunday as we continue our message series, “His Name Will Be Called” with part 3 - “The Mighty God.” You won’t want to miss this!
Jesus demonstrates that He is Mighty through these four actions...
1. Jesus can Cleanse the Sinner

Isaiah 63:1 - Who is this coming from Edom, from Bozrah, with his garments stained crimson? Who is this, robed in splendor, striding forward in the greatness of his strength? “It is I, proclaiming victory, mighty to save.”

- The Red One Comes

- The Robed One Comes

- The Righteous One Comes

2. Jesus can Cure the Sick

Matthew 9:1-8
1 Jesus stepped into a boat, crossed over and came to his own town. 2 Some men brought to him a paralyzed man, lying on a mat. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the man, “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.”

3 At this, some of the teachers of the law said to themselves, “This fellow is blaspheming!”

4 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said, “Why do you entertain evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 6 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “Get up, take your mat and go home.” 7 Then the man got up and went home. 8 When the crowd saw this, they were filled with awe; and they praised God, who had given such authority to man.

- Jesus saw

- Jesus sensed

- Jesus said

3. Jesus can Calm the Storm

Luke 8:22-25
22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.
24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master, we’re going to drown!”
He got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm. 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.
In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

- A mighty catastrophe

- A mighty call

- A mighty Christ

4. Jesus can Call the Saints

Matthew 28:18-20
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

- Christ the conqueror

- Christ the commissioner

- Christ the comforter

His name will be called the Mighty God!

hey

At Valley Chapel, we want to GROW – truly grow! But, what does it mean to grow? True growth isn’t simply getting bigger! Much more than getting bigger is becoming more like Christ. In Ephesians 4:15, we read “…speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ.” We want our church to GROW in maturity to match the head – Jesus Christ. Our mission statement is built around the acronym G.R.O.W....
