Love Has Come | Gifts & Givers

Love Has Come | Gifts & Givers

We all want love, and we’ll go to the ends of the earth to find it…even if what we bring home is only a cheap imitation. But what if love doesn’t need to be found? What if it’s already right here, right now, not so much within our reach, as reaching out to us? What if there’s no need to go looking for love because love has come looking for us? This is Christmas; we’ll celebrate precisely this truth, that love has come−not only in the form of an infant King born in a barn, but in that same King’s relentless, passionate longing to love us in a way that will change everything…if only we will let Him. We would love for you to join us for Christmas Eve as we celebrate Christ’s love.

Welcome to Mission Hills!

Mission Hills is a church family—a family who wants to extend to you the same love, hope, and joy that we have received. We know that we cannot be all things to all people. But we do want to be one thing to all people. We want to be the place where anyone, of any age, of any level of spiritual maturity, of any economic class, of any ethnicity, of any church background—or no church background—can meet God in a way that transforms their life…forever!

If you are a first time guest, we would love to meet you! Stop by the Welcome Center for a free drink at Peakview!

Biblical faith is not passive. It’s actually a very active thing…it’s just a very different kind of activity.

1 // Trusting is literally un-natural to sinful people.

2 // Trusting requires spiritual muscles we aren’t used to using.
God’s never going to call your name and say “Just keep doing what you do.” In this one word, we see both an expression of Abraham’s trust in God but also the reason why God spoke to him in the first place.
What God asked Abraham to do was incomprehensible. This makes absolutely no sense:

1 // First, the concept of child sacrifice is condemned throughout the Bible.

2 // Second, what God asked Abraham to do here is even more confusing than you and I realize.

God wants us to feel this.-- He doesn’t just understand the emotional impact of this call, he pushes into it. WHY? Because God is setting the stage here for us to really understand the Christmas story.
What was the true gift of Christmas?

1 // God’s son.-- Luke 1:35
2 // But not just His son, His only son.-- John 3:16
3 // And not just His only son, the son that He loves.-- Matthew 3:17
So God isn’t just cruelly telling Abraham to do the unthinkable…he’s setting the stage for what he himself will do for us.
He just knows that God can be trusted to fulfill his promises.
He believed Isaac would be returning with him, even if that meant that God would have to raise Isaac from the dead.
Regardless of what Abraham meant, there’s another, even more, profound meaning that attaches to Abraham’s words here: God did provide the lamb.

He did provide a substitute…not just for Isaac, but for every human being who has ever or will ever live…his own son.
God didn’t just send a lamb…he sent his lamb, his son, his only son, his beloved son. Who died as a sacrifice for our sin, in our place.
Now here’s the thing: God did all of this. None of what God ultimately did depends on Abraham. But Abraham did have one all-important role to play: he chose to trust the Giver, not the gift. If he had refused to trust God, as hard and heartbreaking as God’s call seemed, I think things would have turned out very differently…not just for Abraham, but for all of us. But he didn’t. He chose to trust God.

And therein lies the truth that we have to come to grips with: Trusting the Giver more than his gifts paves way for Him to do more than we could have ever expected.
How can I demonstrate to someone this week that love has come in an unexpected way? Who can I shock by imitating the extravagant love of God?
