Intro and Background:
• 3 John is the shortest book in the Bible.
• In 1 John, we read about a lack of love and compassion within the church.
• 2 John tells us there is firmness in love that does not open its doors to every thing and every thought.
• 3 John encourages us to have openness and love that welcomes and supports those who are authentic and helpful.
• 2 and 3 John give us two sides of love.
• It is the challenge of unhealthy leaders within the church. This leader is divisive and is opposing John. John’s concern is urgent. John had already written a letter to this small church, but the leader of the church, Diotrephes (reared by Zeus, aristocratic name), had rejected the letter and banished the leaders John sent the letter with.
• John then tries a second tactic. He fully intends to come and visit, but in the meantime, he writes a personal letter to another man. A friend who he trusts who has not been influenced by Diotrephes. This man’s name is Gaius.

Two men:
1. Gaius:
• Brother
• Faithful to the truth
• Walking in the truth—“en alethia”
• Courageous—he stands up against Diotrephes. This would have been no simple task.
• Faithful in what he is doing for the brothers
• Hospitable—he has opened his home to the brothers that John has sent.
• Generous—he has supported the missionaries that John has sent.
• My behavior is always dictated by my beliefs.
2. Diotrephes:
• Loves to be first
• Will have nothing to do with us; refuses relationship
• Uncooperative
• Malicious gossip
• Refuses to welcome brothers; no hospitality
• Stops others from offering hospitality and kindness; excommunicated people
• Jealous
• Refuses to submit to spiritual leadership

Diotrephes lives on:
1. He still loves to be first.
2. He still loves to tear apart churches.
• Some of you have been to a church where Diotrephes was in operation. He dominated, manipulated, and caused division, strife, and petty issues.

Questions to ponder:
1. Do I love to be first?
• First in my marriage? First in my family? First in need?
• Diotrephes is more interested in building his own position than in furthering the work of God.
2. How do my words influence the community?
• Gossip: can be easily camouflaged.
3. What is my level of cooperation?
• Both of these men are very involved in the local church. One helps and another hurts. It’s not just about being involved.
4. How would I gauge my level of hospitality and generosity?
1 Timothy 3:2, Titus 1:8—hospitality listed as a requirement for a church leader.
Romans 12:13—Share with the Lord’s people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
1 Peter 4:9—Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.
5. Am I walking in the truth?
• “You always become like the god you serve.”
