Discussion Questions
· What does this passage say?
· What does this passage mean to it’s original audience?
· What does this passage tell us about God?
· What does this passage tell us about man?
Main Point: Humanity is made in the image of God, meaning we are created like Him and to represent Him.

Image of God: Overview
-The wording of likeness is perhaps included so that we avoid thinking that humanity is an exact image of God.
-The Hebrew word for image, tselem means, “an object similar to something else and often representative of it.”

Aspects of Our Likeness.
-Genesis doesn’t offer an exhaustive definition about how we bear the image of God, there are observable conclusions from scripture of how we are like God.

Implications.
-If God is our creator, we must answer to him.
-We are to recognize his creation as good, and to be enjoyed.
-Our ultimate drive in life and ministry is to bring God glory.

How is the Image of God Impacted by Sin?
-Even after the tragic event of the fall, scripture makes it clear that humanity is made in the image of God.
-Even in the New Testament, humanity is still described as being created in the Image of God.
-However, since humanity has sinned, the image of God has been distorted.
Image of God: Restoration Found in Christ
- The good news is that since Christ is the “perfect image of God”, and the result of restoration is being to be fully like Christ, then we can speak of being in the image of God not only as our past, but future hope.
Implications: Sanctity of Life, Social Justice, & Self-worth
-The concept of Imago Dei is the foundation for human dignity, equality, and uniqueness.
-Sanctity of Life. Human life finds its purpose not in its usefulness to society, but in relation to being created by God himself.
-Social Justice. If Christians hold to the idea of all of humanity being created in the Image of God, then all of humanity is equal and life is worth fighting for.
-Self-Worth/Esteem. Christianity makes a point it’s not thinking more or less about yourself, “it is thinking of myself less.”
