Nehemiah: Personal Commitment

Nehemiah: Personal Commitment

We continue to look at what 'revival' is, and what it could look like in our lives, our relationships, and our church. This week in Nehemiah 10 we will look at how revival leads to recommitment.

Thanks for joining us today as we study in the book of Nehemiah. Dan Werthman, our interim pastor, will be leading us in a multi-week journey through the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem's wall. In our lives and in our church we often feel as if there can be no recovery from a destructive past. However, Nehemiah shows us that there is nothing that cannot be rebuilt - as long as we seek God's will in our lives.

Whether you're in Central's building, at home, or somewhere far away we've made it easier to be generous. By giving, it’s as if you are saying to God, “I recognize You first. I am putting You first in my life, and I trust You to take care of the rest of the things in my life.”

Revival is a supernatural work of God as the Spirit of God uses the Word of God to turn the hearts of the people back to God Himself, all for the glory of God.
- Tom Palmer

Revival is a sovereign work of God’s Holy Spirit that produces an unusual awakening of spiritual life among God’s people, resulting in an awesome awareness of God, a sincere repentance for sin, a deep longing for God and holiness, and an effective passion to reach the unsaved.
- Brian Edwards

Nehemiah 9:2: ...and they stood and confessed their sins and the guilt of their fathers.
Nehemiah 9:29: They they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck and would not obey.

Students and faculty who came to the altar openly acknowledged faults and spiritual needs. Resentments, animosities, hidden jealousies, and worldly attitudes of all kinds were brought out into the open. A sin often confessed related to the indifferent way they had been living towards God. As one student expressed it, “I’ve becoming nonchalant about being a Christian and of witnessing to others.” Asking for the prayers of those around him, he fell at the altar to seek forgiveness and to make a new and deep surrender of his life.
- God in Our Midst by Howard Hanke

Nehemiah 10:38: Because of all this we make a firm covenant in writing; on the sealed document are the names of our leaders, our Levites, and our priests.
They make a recommitment.

Nehemiah 9:28:The rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the temple servants, and all who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God,
1. They recommit to being part of God’s people.

Nehemiah 10:28: …all who have separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God
Act 14:15: We are proclaiming good news (the gospel) to you, that you should turn from these worthless things to the living God

Nehemiah 10:29: They …entered into a curse and an oath to walk in God's Law that was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the LORD our Lord and His rules and His statutes.
2. They recommit to being under God’s Word.

Luke 11:28: Jesus replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it.”
John 14:15: "If you love Me, you will obey what I command.”

Nehemiah 10:30: We will not give our daughters to the peoples of the land or take their daughters for our sons.
3. They recommit to marriage that reflects God’s relationship with His people.

1 Corinthians 7:39: …she is free to marry anyone she wishes, but he must belong to the Lord.
2 Corinthians 6:14: Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.

Nehemiah 10:31: And if the peoples of the land bring in goods or any grain on the Sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the Sabbath or on a holy day.
4. They recommit to weekly worship with God’s people.

Colossians 2:16-17: Therefore do not let anyone judge …with regard to a religious festival, …or a Sabbath day. These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Nehemiah 10:31: And we will forego the crops of the seventh year and the exaction of every debt.
5. They recommit to obey God in their work and finances, and to trust in His
faithfulness.

Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all of your heart and do not rely on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will guide you on the right paths.

Nehemiah 10:32: We also take on ourselves the obligation to give yearly a third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God:
Nehemiah 9:33: …for all the work of the house of our God.

Nehemiah 10:35-37: We obligate ourselves to bring the firstfruits, ...our contributions, ...and tithes...
Nehemiah 10:39: ...We will not neglect the house of our God.
6. They recommit to supporting the worship of God at the temple.

Revival is a spiritual adjustment and cleansing for Christians, bringing them back to health and freedom.
- Ralph Sutera
