What do you believe so deeply that it actually determines how you live your life day by day?
Do you not know…?
He is asking them to become aware of a simple but vitally important reality.
He is asking them to become aware of a simple but vitally important reality.
…when you present yourselves to someone…
This is theact of placing yourself at another’s disposal or to stand ready to obey them.
This is theact of placing yourself at another’s disposal or to stand ready to obey them.
…as slaves for obedience…
This is a person who gives him or herself up, submitting entirely (surrenders) to another’s will.
This is a person who gives him or herself up, submitting entirely (surrenders) to another’s will.
…you are slaves of the one whom you obey…
You become a servant of the one you submit to or, in our term, surrender to.
You become a servant of the one you submit to or, in our term, surrender to.
…either of sin, resulting in death…
Paul is personifying the sinful nature as a master or one to whom we can choose to yield authority to.
Paul is personifying the sinful nature as a master or one to whom we can choose to yield authority to.
Death here speaks of physical death as well as all the miseries arising out of sin on either side of physical life on earth.
…or obedience resulting in righteousness?
The obedience spoken of here assumes obedience is to Jesus.
The obedience spoken of here assumes obedience is to Jesus.
Paul is saying righteousness is a result of submitting/surrendering to Jesus, not a result of any form of good works.
This is the idea of surrendering to Jesus deeply and with great enough trust we rely on/ yield to His leadership.
Paul is telling us we are either surrendering to sin or to Jesus.
Jesus calls us to yield/surrender to His authority because we trust Him and have come to know Perfect Love.
This is the heartbeat of this church family – to learn to do life in sync with God. That’s what it means to live as a disciple and to make a disciple.
For the wages of sin is death… Romans 6:23
There is a way which seems right to a man, but it’s end is the way of death. Proverbs 14:12
…the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
…the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
In our day to day lives we can live in surrender to sin and find death or in surrender to Jesus and find life. That’s the choice.
We have to choose surrender to Jesus. We will not surrender naturally.
If we choose/intend to surrender to Jesus we are choosing or intending to obey Jesus.
Surrender is marked by the intentional, regular practice of obedience – doing life Jesus’ way.
Are you largely convinced your options on any given day are to surrender to sin or to Jesus?
Are you largely convinced this amounts to a choice between death and life?
