Title: A Life Built for Others
Scripture: Jeremiah 29:1-14
Speaker: Reid Kapple, ReidK@ChristCommunityKC.org

>> We can’t just live in our city. We must love our city
>> Seeing the city within the city
“On the one hand, God tells his people to ‘increase’ to retain their distinct community identity and to grow, but he also tells them to settle down and engage in the life of the great city….While living in Babylon, they are not simply to increase their tribe in a ghetto within the city; they are to use their resources to benefit the common good.” -Tim Keller
>> Love the city to life
1. Know the city’s culture
2. Own the city’s problems
3. Invest in the city’s future
>> Long for the city that lasts

Title: A Life That Built for Others

Big Idea: Reid’s big idea of the sermon was “We can’t just live in our city. We must love our city.” Discuss something you took away from this statement in particular or the sermon in general.

Tension: “God has placed them in a foreign culture not so that they would isolate themselves from the city nor that they would assimilate themselves to the city. But that they would work for the common good of the city.”
1. Talk about the dangers of isolation and assimilation?
2. Which one do you think our church tends toward?
3. Which one do you tend to move toward?

Ambassadors: Reid gave the example that we are Ambassadors and not simply Aliens. Do you find this analogy helpful? Why or why not?

Next Steps: the following are the next steps Reid gave in his sermon. Rather than ask questions about them I have simply given them here for you to READ, DISCUSS, and seek to APPLY. Have fun!

I) Know your cities culture
1. Know your neighbors across the street and across town
a) Interact with people different from you.
b) Shop in different areas
c) Learn from an immigrant

II) Own your cities problems
1. I think one serious indictment on us as westerners is that we don’t see the problems of our neighbors as our problems. And particularly the problems of the vulnerable in our community.

III) Invest in your cities future
1. Raise children
2. Do good work
3. Pray
4. Give

Opportunity: Depending on where you are as a group, the application above may be enough. For some of you though here are some additional opportunities. Perhaps you could meet as a group during our break (from fall session to winter session) and try to be involved in one or more of these ideas. Have fun!

1. We have a great opportunity to bless our neighbors through Mission Southside’s Tree of Hope. There will be paper ornaments in the lobby starting November 12 with gift ideas that you can purchase for a child in need in our community. These gifts will be collected for Mission Southside’s Christmas Store where people are able to shop for their children. Please return your purchased unwrapped gift by December 3. Contact Nikki Dieker with any questions.
2. Other outreach ideas Under Olathe on the Website

Prayer: pray as you are led.
