Key Points to remember in today's message from God's Word
Hope Bearers
Luke 7:1-17
Part 6 of the "Engage" series
Pastor Shawn Thornton
October 21 & 22, 2017
People desperately searching for hope should see and hear the hope of Christ through our lives.
#1: Hope Bearers bring hope to the helpless (1-8)
No matter how helpless we feel, we confidently believe our God heals the broken.
-In His time
-In His way
-For His purpose
#2: Hope Bearers bring hope to the hopeless (9-17)
No matter how hopeless we feel, we confidently believe our God raises the dead.
-Because He is life
-Because He is the giver of life
-Because He is the conquerer of death
-Because He is the provider of new life
The hope others must hear and see in us has nothing to do with our shifting circumstances, but has everything to do with our unchangingGod.
Do others know your confidence is in your God and what He has done in Christ?

Monday — 2 Timothy 3:14-17
When I hear the term “breath,” it causes interesting imagery in my mind. As a teenager, I struggled with asthma, and now one of my children does as well. Breathing is something that is involuntary; we don’t choose to do it. It naturally happens. We take it for granted until it is abnormal. Breathing is necessary for life and, if negatively affected, can compromise the entire body.
When we look at the breath of God, and its role in the life of the believer, we know that it is vital for our daily lives. Knowing that Scripture is the God-breathed, inspired Word of God, it can bring us great confidence. Just as God is constant and never-changing, so is His Word. His scriptures are “a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,” and useful in all situations. Often, we neglect His Word and take it for granted.
Spending time in God’s Word is completely voluntary, meaning we must choose to open it, read it, study it, and memorize it.
What choice are you making?
For Today: Read a Psalm or one of your favorite passages. Thank God for the message He has given us through His scriptures.
Tuesday — Galatians 3:6-11
We all put faith in a lot of things. Regularly, we put faith in chairs to hold us up when we sit down. We don’t even think about it; we trust the chair. Recently, many of you put a lot of faith in the Dodgers pitching rotation. However, sometimes you trust it, and sometimes you don’t. People put faith in family members that will come through for them when things are tough. Others put a lot of faith in themselves and the work that they can do. They trust in themselves to accomplish what needs to be done to be successful in their day-to-day lives.
Having faith in God, and what he has done for us through Jesus, is the kind of faith that we all must have. It’s a faith that Jesus is who He said He is, that He did what He said He would do, and that He will keep His promise that He has for us in the future. It is standing on the promises of God in spite of everything that is thrown your way in this world. It is holding fast to the love of God through Jesus’ death on the cross that saves us from our sin and gives us hope for the future.
For Today: Thank God for keeping His promises to you. Ask Him to help you see Him and trust Him in every area of your life.
Wednesday — Ephesians 2:8
I’m one of those people who struggles to receive freebies from my friends or anyone. Receiving something from someone and not being able to settle the score makes me uncomfortable. Getting a gift I don’t deserve or receiving a blessing that I wasn’t expecting can be a challenge for me.
For many people, the gift of salvation is a gift of grace that is hard to receive. People feel they need to earn it. They want to think their competencies are valuable. The gift of salvation is a free gift of grace that is given to those unmerited. None of us can earn or deserve the gift God gave us through Jesus. We can never repay it. There is beauty in that. We want to feel valued, but we miss out on the point that we have always been valued. God loves us so much that He made a way through Jesus for us to be saved; there is no other way. There is no greater gift.
For Today: Take a moment and write a thank you note to God. Leave it in your Bible as a bookmark to remember what He’s done for you.
Thursday — Colossians 1:15-20
Everyone loves a hero. The movie theaters and bookstores are filled with stories that include a hero that saves the day, rescues others and vanquishes foes. I love the stories where the unassuming individual unlocks their potential unseen to those closest to them and rises to meet the challenge that no one else can face. They realize they are designed for this moment.
Jesus Christ is our hero. While He lived on this earth, He was just an unassuming son of a carpenter from the town of Nazareth. But, He understood His purpose. His Father sent Him to earth for us and because of His sacrifice we can be saved. We often sing a song reminding us that Jesus has no rival and has no equal. He is our hero because He saved and rescued us.
For Today: Thank Jesus for taking the punishment for your sins.
Friday — 1 Corinthians 10:31
Have you ever asked yourself, “What’s the point in life?” You may find that your routine doesn’t change much from week to week. Now and then you may go through a season that gives you hope, but eventually you settle back into the familiar routine again.
What if everything you did had a purpose? 1 Corinthians tells us that no matter what you do give glory to God. That means everything; work, fun, eating, doctors appointments, root canals, everything. To give God glory or to glorify Him would be to find a way to praise and honor Him in all things. It would be to acknowledge the presence of God in our lives at every moment and always acknowledge His provision for us. It’s much easier to give God glory when we accept and realize He is with us no matter what.
For Today: Praise God for His presence in your life.
