Sharing Lives in a Devout, Upright, and Blameless Manner
1 Thessalonians 2:5-10
Pastor Jerry Koller
...You know how we lived among you for your sake. (1 Thess. 1:5)
When one reads through the Bible, it is easy to gloss over many things without really thinking about what you have read.
During the time Paul’s team spent with the Thessalonians, they never used flattery or deception when it came to sharing and living out the Gospel.
· Flattery is excessive or insincere praise.
Paul said the saints know from first-hand experience how they were never deceptive or insincere.
· They never put on a mask to cover up greed.
We were not looking for praise from men, not from you or anyone else.
If the team’s motivation was to seek personal gain, there was a way to justify this.
· As apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you.
Rather, ...we were gentle among you, like a mother caring for her little children. (1 Thess. 2:7)
There is a nuance here that is not picked up by the NIV translators. The NAS translators do pick this up.

But we proved to be gentle among you, as a nursing mother tenderly cares for her own children. (1 Thess. 2:7)
The Greek word for mother is not found in this verse.
If you are using the NASB, you will notice that the word "mother" is in italics. This means the word is not actually found in the Greek manuscripts but was inserted for clarification.
This is the only place in the entire New Testament where this word is used.
· It has to do with the idea of one who is nursing, or a nurse.
· It comes from a verb which means to nourish or support; to bring up or nurture.
· This is the reason why the NASB adds the word mother as a clarifier—although nurses, or better wet nurses—also carried out these responsibilities as well.
The phrase “surely you remember” is not so much of a reminder as it is an appeal to how they conducted themselves when they were together.
The phrase toil and hardship is translated labor and hardship in the NAS.
...nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with labor and hardship we kept working night and day so that we would not be a burden to any of you. (2 Thess. 3:8 NASB)
By supplying their own needs, the team removed any and all possibilities of having someone accuse them of being greedy, of sharing the Gospel for personal gain.
Holy is a word that means devoutly, in a manner that is pleasing to God.
The NAS uses the word uprightly because the Greek word means upright, or virtuous; in keeping with the commands of God.
The third adjective is blameless.
· Blameless is not sinless.
· Blameless simply means no one can make accusations of wrongdoing. It means being free from blame.
APPLICATION
Today’s Scripture has an abundance of timeless principles that can be applied to our lives today.
#1. H.U.B. Principle
· A hub can be the center of a wheel from which all spokes extend.
· A hub is also the effective center of an activity, region, or network.
· The H.U.B. principle deals with the core characteristics of how we should live out our faith before God and our fellow man.
Holy—The first characteristic of the H.U.B. principle is that we must live in a manner that is pleasing to God.
· Holy must describe our relationship with God as well as our relationships with all men.
· For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. (1 Thess. 4:7)
· A holy life is one that is separated from sin that seeks to bring honor and glory to God.
Upright—This goes hand-in-hand with the first characteristic.
· This has to do with living according to what is right and wrong—not according to the world’s standards but according to God’s standards.
· It is living in moral excellence.
· It means living according to God’s commands.
Blameless—This means that even though you may fail at times, your heart passionately pursues God.
· It means your heart is devoted to God.
#2. Shared Lives
· The life we live cannot—must not—be lived in isolation.
· We share the Gospel but not ourselves.
· We comment on the Word, but we do not allow others to see us living it out.
Somewhere along the line, we have reduced discipleship to simply imparting information.
· We have neglected the importance of mentorship—of taking someone under your wing so that you can show them from personal experience how one lives out their faith for the glory of God.
The principle of shared lives means we are engaged in relationships that encourages others to follow us as we follow Christ.
Shared lives mean we instruct, pattern, and encourage others to live in a holy, upright, and blameless manner.
Is this how you are living out your faith?
