Jeremiah 31:1-25
Tidings of Comfort and Joy

In our text we see three actions performed that give us hope for the future.

I. The promises of God given to His people
A. He will be their God

Genesis 17:7- I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you.

B. He will give them rest
C. He will build them up
D. He will bring them back
E. He will turn their mourning to gladness

II. The weeping of Rachel for her people
A. Who is Rachel?

Genesis 35:16-19- While they were still some distance from Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty. And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth, the midwife said to her, "Don't be afraid, for you have another son." As she breathed her last — for she was dying — she named her son Ben-Oni. But his father named him Benjamin. So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).

B. Why is she weeping?
C. Why is it important?

III. The deliverance of Jesus for His people
A. The hope for the future

Psalm 22:27-28- All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord, and all the families of the nations will bow down before him, for dominion belongs to the Lord and he rules over the nations.

B. The return from exile

Colossians 1:21-22- Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation.

- He has become our God and we are His people.
2 Corinthians 6:16- We are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."

- He has become our rest.
Hebrews 4:2-3- For we also have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did; but the message they heard was of no value to them, because those who heard did not combine it with faith. Now we who have believed enter that rest.

- He has built us up.
Ephesians 2:21-22- In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

- He has brought us out of bondage.
Colossians 1:13-14- For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

- He has turning mourning into gladness.
John 16:22- Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
