Title: Newer Is Better
Scripture: Genesis 3:8-24
Speaker: Tim Spanburg, TimS@ChristCommunityKC.org

I. Yes...Newer is better.
II. No...what is new cannot save us.
"We knew the world would not be the same. A few people laughed, a few people cried. Most people were silent. I remembered the line from the Hindu Scripture, the Bhagavad Gita...Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds. I suppose we all thought that, one way or another."
- J. Robert Oppenheimer
>> What is wrong with us?
1. Our problem is personal.
2. Our problem is corporate.

"Those who call for a Christian assault on the worlds of politics and economics often make it clear that the attack belongs to the same order of being as the enemy to be attacked. The aim of the attack is to seize the levers of power and take control. We have seen many such successful revolutions, and we know that in most cases what has happened is simply that the oppressors and the oppressed have exchanged roles. The structure is unchanged. The throne is unshaken, only there is a different person occupying it. How is the throne itself to be shaken?"
- Lesslie Newbigin
>> What is wrong with us?
1. Our problem is personal.
2. Our problem is corporate.
3. Our problem is supernatural.
"I know there is a God because in Rwanda I shook hands with the devil. I have seen him, I have smelled him and I have touched him. I know the devil exists, and therefore I know there is a God." - Romeo Dallaire
III. Yes...all things will be made new.
1. Work hard to make things new now.
2. Jesus alone will make all things new.

Title: Newer Is Better

ICE BREAKER: What technological invention of the future are you most looking forward to? (be creative - flying cars of course but what about something like automatic diaper changers for babies)!

OUGHT = New Things aren’t bad: God created mankind to cultivate, create, innovate, and make new things. One of the ways we glorify God is when we use these skills.
1) What new technologies are you grateful for that have aided you?

IS (part 1) = New Things aren’t enough: “Progress without Purpose is Pointless.” Solving one problem with technology only leads to another problem. This is because “the heart of the problem is the problem of the human heart.”
1) Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?
2) What are other examples you would use as evidence to make this argument?
a) Hint: (examples of the atomic bomb or technology for cyber bullying).

IS (part 2) = We are cursed: Spend time discussing how we are cursed both individually and corporately. What differences are there? Why does this distinction matter? How do you see the curse affecting you personally in these areas?
1) We are cursed individually
2) We are cursed corporately

CAN = Using Technology for the Common Good: We realize technology cannot be our saviour yet what are some practical ways you can use technology to help promote the common good?

WILL = All things will be made new: Read Revelation 21:2-5. Talk about what stands out to you? Specifically, what difference does the phrase “all things being made new” offer?

PRAYER: Please pray as you are led.
