Principle 1: Realize I’m not God. I admit that I am powerless to control my tendency to do the wrong thing and that my life is unmanageable.
Step 1: We admitted we were powerless over our addictions and compulsive behaviour; that our lives had become unmanageable.
STOP Doing Two Things:
1) STOP denying the pain.
2) STOP playing God.
START Admitting Two Things:
1) START admitting your powerlessness.
2) START admitting that your life has become unmanageable.
Pride.
Only ifs.
Worry.
Escape.
Resentments.
Loneliness.
Emptiness.
Selfishness.
Separation.
DISCUSSION STARTER:
How has pride stopped you from asking for and getting help to overcome your hurts, habits and hang-ups?
NEXT STEP:
Back in my school days, I remember going through an exercise of how to sit in my desk if the siren goes off to indicate we are under nuclear attack. I don’t consider myself that old, but these were all part of the old curriculum stemming from the Cold War. Things have changed so much since then - society, the knowledge that this exercise actually won’t help, and I have changed. The truth is, it happened, but it simply doesn’t apply in our current reality.

Isn’t it interesting, though, that we often bring our hurts, habits and hang-ups into our current reality and yet don’t question if they are still relevant today. No doubt, we need to deal with our past to hope for our future as we live in today, but bringing our past into our present often doesn’t lead us down a pathway to peace. What are you holding onto? It happened, but is it relevant in your currently reality? Do you want to continue travelling with this baggage in hand? Are you holding the hand of God, or the handle of your heavy packs with a clenched fist? Is this making you better or bitter?

Our next step is to evaluate what we are bringing into our present. Before you look at others, start with yourself, as this is the place you can make the most change. Remember, this is your next step.
