John 2:1-7

John 2:8-12

More than a miracle
Jesus went to a wedding, the hosts ran out of wine and Jesus turned water into wine. This perhaps one of Jesus most famous miracles today. In his gospel, John doesn't call it a miracle though. He calls it a sign. What that means is that this event is more than a miracle but a sign that points us towards knowing and believing in Jesus.

What does this story tell us about Jesus?

John 2:11

They have no more wine!
Weddings were important events in 1st century Galilee. The were community wide celebrations that could last up to a week. Running out of wine would bring shame and dishonour to the host family in a way that we may find it difficult to understand today.

The truth is that we are all the hosts in this story. We are all out of wine, we all fall short, we all experience lack.

We are all out of wine. Mary believes that Jesus is the answer.

John 2:3-5

Jesus answers lack with abundance
It seems important to John that we know how many and how large the jars are that were filled with water to be turned to wine. It also seems important that we know they were filled to the brim. Why?

John wants us to know that Jesus answered the issue of lack not with sufficiency but with abundance.

John 2:6-7

Ephesians 3:20-21

"You Have Saved the Best Until Now"
Jesus' response is not just an abundance of cheap wine. His wine is better than the best wine the hosts could offer. But the wine is not the point, Jesus is. He is the best saved until now.

Is there anything in your life that you are valuing more than Jesus?
Jesus is better.

John 2:8-10

Philippians 3:7-9

Do you believe?
John wrote that this was the first sign in which Jesus revealed his glory and as a result his disciples believed. Mary already believed.

Do you believe?

John 2:11

2. What do you think the hosts of the wedding would have been feeling when they ran out of wine?
3. What was Jesus demonstrating about himself by producing so much wine?
4. Why is the significance of the master of the banquets words, "you have saved the best until now."
5. Where do you need to see Jesus' abundance in your life at the moment?
6. Are there things that you have been valuing above Jesus? What would it look like to live out the belief that Jesus is better that all else?
