Not HOW we express the Holy Spirit
How we let Him express Himself in our lives!
We have studied Him in great detail. Now lets take a look at how he expresses Himself in the life of a Holy Spirit surrendered believer.
________________________________________________
1. The Holy Spirit teaches in perfect ways that are relevant, appropriate, and persuasive.
1 Corinthians 2:13
"When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths."
Expression:
Ask the Lord for greater reliance on the Spirit and less on your own insights in teaching, preaching and counseling.
________________________________________________
2. The Holy Spirit counsels in sensitive ways according to the perceived and real needs of people.
John 14:26
"But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you."
Expression:
Ask the Lord to give you greater counseling skills as you grow more in touch with the words of the great Counselor.
Counsel like He counsels?
________________________________________________
3. The Holy Spirit instructs you in what, why and how you should speak.
Luke 12:11-12
“And when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities, don’t worry about how to defend yourself or what to say, for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said.”
Expression:
In pressured situations, don't panic - take a moment to ask the Lord to give you a keener ear to hear what the Spirit of God is speaking to you about. “Is it true?”
________________________________________________
4. The Holy Spirit testifies about the truth of Jesus Christ.
John 15:26
“But I will send you the Advocate[a]—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me."
Expression:
As the Spirit’s working in your mind, will and emotions increases - so does your testimony!
________________________________________________
5. The Holy Spirit witnesses of the great power of God and His mighty works.
Acts 5:32
"We are witnesses of these things and so is the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those who obey him."
Expression:
Ask the Lord to increase the effectiveness of your witness through the Spirit’s enabling. Change of approach?
________________________________________________
6. The Holy Spirit helps you to determine genuine from counterfeit.
1 John 4:2
"This is how we know if they have the Spirit of God: If a person claiming to be a prophet acknowledges that Jesus Christ came in a real body, that person has the Spirit of God."
Expression:
Be willing to grow in all types of discernment regarding people, situations and organizations. Open your heart to Him and not your own prejudices and pre judgments.
________________________________________________
7. The Holy Spirit speaks powerful, persuasively and truthfully through Christians.
Matthew 10:20
"For it is not you who will be speaking—it will be the Spirit of your Father speaking through you."
Expression:
Spend time to pray and listen to what the Spirit is speaking to you about enabling you to be an effective instrument.
________________________________________________
8. The Holy Spirit leads us in ways we cannot see.
Acts 8:29
"The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”
Expression:
Be readily available to be led by the Spirit in ways that may not make sense to you.
________________________________________________
9. The Holy Spirit encourages us by giving us abundant fruit.
Acts 9:31
"The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers."
Expression:
Ask the Lord to encourage you by giving you a great quantity and quality of fruit for the Lord’s kingdom and righteousness sake. There will be increase.
________________________________________________
10. The Holy Spirit communicates in the letter of our hearts in the spirit of truth.
2 Corinthians 2:3
"Clearly, you are a letter from Christ showing the result of our ministry among you. This “letter” is written not with pen and ink, but with the Spirit of the living God. It is carved not on tablets of stone, but on human hearts."
Expression:
Be about the business of making disciples that are both in the substance and attitude of truth. Solid food pressing on to maturity.
________________________________________________
11. The Holy Spirit gives life to those who have saving faith in Christ.
John 6:63
"The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life."
Expression:
Be passionate and courageous to help people recognize the life giving power in scripture for their eternal life, hope and direction.
________________________________________________
12. The Holy Spirit sets us free from the law and its guilt and death.
Romans 8:2
"And because you belong to him, the power[a] of the life-giving Spirit has freed you[b] from the power of sin that leads to death."
Expression:
Thank the Lord for all the ways that He has set you free from the law and its guilt and its consequences.
________________________________________________
13. The Holy Spirit strengthens us by helping us in prayer.
Romans 8:26
"And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words."
Expression:
Bind that which needs to be bound and release that which needs to be released. He is the provision in every weakness, deficiency or inadequacy.
________________________________________________
14. The Holy Spirit gives spiritual gifts that enable the whole church to be more effective in evangelism and edification.
1 Corinthians 14:7-11
"A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice[a]; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge.[b] The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages,[c] while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have."
Expression:
Begin the journey today, with His direction to identify and sharpen your own spiritual gifts in serving others.
Note Verse 7:
A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

The Believer’s Relationship with the Gifts:
The gifts are expressions or manifestations of the Spirit’s presence.
The Greek word for “manifestation” means – a shining forth, a making visible, a clear display, plain evidence.
Thus, we are used to reveal the presence of the Holy Spirit.
________________________________________________
The key thought is that we are the “used” and not the “users”
The use of the gifts is a cooperation between man and the spirit.
We do not lose control of ourselves
We are actually a team with the Holy Spirit.
The Greek word for gifts:
DORON – an expression of honor for something we have done.
CHARISMA or CHARIS – a grace, unmerited favor.
