Intro: Abundant Life
A. John 10:7-15 – “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. 8 All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. 9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. 10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life. 11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. 12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. 13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep. 14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, 15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.
B. John 20:31 – The disciples saw Jesus do many other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may continue to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing in him you will have life by the power of his name.
C. Believing in Jesus produces life, satisfying, full, abundant life
D. Life is more than just surviving, it’s growth, happiness, love & sacrifice
E. A relationship with Jesus is essential to a full satisfying life
1. Jesus wants life & fulfillment for us
A. John 8:12 – Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”
B. Light comes with life, believing turns on a light in our spirits
C. When we're afraid of the dark, we turn on a light!
D. When we follow in the light, we can see. The farther we separate ourselves from light, the harder it is to see
E. As believers, we are His reflected light
F. Isaiah 9:2 – The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.
G. Light enables those who sit in darkness, to move about, displaying signs of life. This only comes from following God
2. More important than food?
A. John 6:47-51 – “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes has eternal life. 48 Yes, I am the bread of life! 49 Your ancestors ate manna in the wilderness, but they all died. 50 Anyone who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. 51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Anyone who eats this bread will live forever; and this bread, which I will offer so the world may live, is my flesh.”
B. Food is needed to sustain life, to survive
C. Jesus is saying “I am the bread of life”
D. Believing in Jesus, brings the nourishing, sustaining, power, of the life of Jesus!
E. Manna was temporary, all who ate it eventually died, but living bread is eternal!
F. Jesus offered "living bread" his body on the cross to give you forgiveness
3. More important than water?
A. John 4:10-14 – Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” 11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?” 13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
B. The “Gift” is God’s son, the gift is Jesus
C. The gift comes with living water, who is the Holy Spirit
D. Jesus says the water He gives comes from a spring inside us
E. We don’t draw water anymore, we ARE the well and we are continually filled
F. Jesus wants to give us life, abundant, full life
G. Jesus has an offer for you, all you have to do is accept
