Life Group Lesson for the Week of September 10, 2017

Through the prophet Isaiah the Lord clearly warns us “not to think like everyone else does.” God’s people should not call everything a conspiracy or live in fear. Instead we should “make the LORD of Heaven’s Armies holy” in our lives. He alone is the One who should make us tremble! (see Isaiah 8:11-13) God’s people have a greater assignment than to live in dread of what might happen. God’s people are to live with a heart for the people around us in need of hope.

Too often, we look to this world for answers instead of looking into God’s Word. Too often we listen to surrounding voices and forget our purpose as a people redeemed by God. And so we drift and allow many other things to distract us from the mission of Christ. It’s time we refocus and align our mission with the mission of Christ—reaching people far from God in need of His love. Time is short and God wants His people to pause, step back, and get a new perspective.

Read Isaiah 8:11 – 9:7

Many people today are indifferent to the message of the Bible. So instead of aligning our lives with God’s eternal truth, we just attempt to make up our own ‘truth’ as we go. Isaiah says people who contradict God’s word “are completely in the dark. They will go from one place to another, weary and hungry. And because they are hungry, they will curse their king and their God.” (Isaiah 8:20b-21). But then, like a gleaming ray of hope on the horizon, the Lord gives this promise through the prophet Isaiah: “Nevertheless, that time of darkness and despair will not go on forever” (Isaiah 9:1a). Christ left heaven and came to this earth for people—heavy-hearted, worry-filled people who like sheep get lost and have no where to turn.

1. Jesus said the Son of Man came to “seek and save those who are lost” (Luke 19:10). How much do you think about the unchurched person next door, at work, or across from you at the dinner table?

Are the following statements true or false for you? (reflect and explain) —

I am personally responsible to do my part to reach out to unchurched people for Christ.

I am willing to go out of my way if need be to love, invite, and build a bridge of friendship so that someone else can know the love of Jesus.

What would it look like for you to do your part in helping to reach people for Christ? How can you be more intentional about sharing Christ’s love with another individual in need of hope?

Listen to the tremendous hope in Isaiah’s proclamation –
For a child is born to us, a Son is given to us. The government will rest on His shoulders, and He will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of His ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven’s Armies will make this happen!
Isaiah 9:6-7

2. Can you remember what it was like before you met Christ? What was the turning point for you? Who introduced you to Christ?

Would you be willing to share your story with an unchurched person if the opportunity availed itself? Are you willing to pray for such an opportunity?

Sharing Christ with another person may be easier than you think. As we respond in obedience to God’s promptings, we can be certain of at least two things: (1) the Holy Spirit is ultimately responsible (that takes the pressure off!) and (2) when “The light shines in the darkness… the darkness can never extinguish it” (John 1:5).

3. Practically speaking how does God’s light break through for all to see on a daily basis? (for example, see Psalm 19)

What is it about the light of Christ that stirs passion in you?

Who did Christ come to save? He came to save lost people just like you and me. If you haven’t personally accepted this beautiful gift of salvation, Jesus is ready to welcome you into His arms right now. God is a good Father and His love for you is perfect. The Bible says, “Whatever is good and perfect comes down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow” (James 1:17). You don’t have to worry that you might find God in a bad mood or indifferent to your troubles or pain. He is always thinking about you. Simply trust the Lord and let His light pierce your darkness.

We may not often think about it, but every good thing—a smile, a song, an act of kindness, the beauty of creation—are all reflections of a good God. There is no limit to God’s goodness. In fact, He ultimately demonstrated His goodness through His Son, the One given the name Jeshua – the One who saves us from sin (Matthew 1:21, Luke 1:31). This is the glorious Good News: we don’t have to die in sin. Our lives can be forgiven, washed clean, and redirected toward life and a new purpose!

4. You have a new reservation in heaven. Christ has already made the necessary arrangements and paid the price. Legacy 210* is about telling others (God’s ‘who’ – lost people who matter to Him) that Christ loves them too. Our cities and communities are filled with people who don’t yet know Jesus or the mighty things He has done. Will you pause and pray right now? Pray for people not only to know Christ, but to fall in love with Him!

*After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the LORD or remember the mighty things He had done for Israel (Judges 2:10).

Not on my watch!
