Jehova Rapha
We have called this series the “Names of God.” What this series and titles represent/reveal to us are different aspects of the nature of God.
Jehovah = Mixing the term YHWH (Latin JHVH) with vowels Adonai (JAHOVAH) make the word Jehovah. Basically came from translating the Latin Vulgate into English. Most newer translations go straight from the original language and is why we don’t actually see this term.
Ra.Pha – root means to Mend/Fix
Meaning
1) to heal, make healthful
1a) (Qal) to heal
1a1) of God
1a2) healer, physician (of men)
1a3) of hurts of nations involving restored favour (fig)
1a4) of individual distresses (fig)
REVELATION ALWAYS COMES IN A TIME OF CRISIS
First Use of YHWH Rapha: Means something significant in the Bible. (Exodus 15:26)
When you go through the desert, what is deep within you will be drawn out, especially when times get tough. Those things you can bury behind your “church face” will start to seep out of your pores.
We also see how a leader is to act…while the people moan and get bitter before him Moses crys out to God who makes the way.
Moses and the bitter water Mara
The Israelites had just come through the crossing at the Red Sea Ex 14
Exodus 15:22-2722 So Moses brought Israel from the Red Sea; then they went out into the Wilderness of Shur. And they went three days in the wilderness and found no water. 23 Now when they came to Marah, they could not drink the waters of Marah, for they were bitter. Therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24 And the people complained against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” 25 So he cried out to the Lord, and the Lord showed him a tree. 21 When he cast it into the waters, the waters were made sweet. There He made a statute and an ordinance for them, and there He tested them, 26 and said, “If you diligently heed the voice of the Lord your God and do what is right in His sight, give ear to His commandments and keep all His statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you which I have brought on the Egyptians. For I am the Lord who heals you.” 27 Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve wells of water and seventy palm trees; so they camped there by the waters.
1. The first thing we have to understand is that God can’t heal someone who is not sick.
a. This means people will get sick!
b. Bad things will happen
2. God has 3 answers for every request for healing
a. Not right now, but I’ll be with you!
Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes, I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.’
Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
b. Yes – now and on the Earth
Exodus 23:25 25“So you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will bless your bread and your water. And I will take sickness away from the midst of you.
c. Yes – but with a glorified body
Revelation 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”
1 Corinthians 15:53-57 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
SOMETIMES WHEN WE ARE LIVING IN A FALLIBLE BODY MERCY IS NOT REVIVING WHAT IS BROKEN BUT MAKING IT BRAND NEW!
3. We always have hope…Bitterness is the loss of all Hope!
a. There is a purpose even in sickness:
Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
b. When things are good we tend to push God away and separates ourselves, whereas TRIALS BRING US CLOSER TO GOD
4. Can become bitterness…(the waters of Marah)
a. Bitterness is the World’s deadliest disease
b. Bitterness will make you unable to praise God
c. Causes
i. Wounds/deep trauma
ii. Abuse/Taken advantage of
d. Started for the Israelites when Moses and Aaron showed up with all the signs in Exodus Ch. 4
Exodus 5:18-2118 Therefore go now and work; for no straw shall be given you, yet you shall deliver the quota of bricks.” 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble after it was said, “You shall not reduce any bricks from your daily quota.” 20 Then, as they came out from Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron who stood there to meet them. 21 And they said to them, “Let the Lord look on you and judge, because you have made us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us.”
Instead of wiping them out He shows Moses a tree and Moses cut’s it down throws it into the waters and they were healed.
It’s here where God reveals his name Jehovah Rapha – The God who heals and mends/rebuilds.
If you decide I’M NOT GOING TO FORGIVE…GOD YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY DID…WHAT YOU ALLOWED TO HAPPEN
An experience with Jehovah Rapha is like no other. It’s a comfort that you can’t get any other place or any other way but in the crisis and an experience with GOD that can’t be denied the rest of your life
Isaiah 53:4-5 4 Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows;Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed.
Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, For they shall be comforted.
Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted And binds up their wounds.
IF you reject God as Jehovah Rapha you will meet God as Jehovah Nakah
Hebrews 10:26-27 26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.
Jehovah (YHWH) NAKAH – The Lord who strikes/smites
to strike, smite, hit, beat, slay, kill
GOD Offers a way to restore you to peace and favor, to heal your wounds but if you won’t accept it then you’ll face him as Jehovah Nakhah
Hebrews 12:14-15 14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled;
God revealed as Jehovah Nakhah – Bitterness is an abomination
Ezekiel 7:9 ‘My eye will not spare, Nor will I have pity; I will repay you according to your ways, And your abominations will be in your midst. Then you shall know that I am the Lord who strikes.
When you turn down Jehovah Rapha; Jehovah Nakah will be God’s last chance to redeem you.
God is the ultimate Father and will discipline His children (God pulls out His belt) and you will feel like the World is against you.
Proverbs 23:24 He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him promptly.
Proverbs 12:13-14 13 Do not withhold correction from a child, For if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. 14 You shall beat him with a rod,And deliver his soul from hell.
God is much more concerned about your character and your salvation than He is your COMFORT!
Why- What is God’s Goal?
Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.
1 Timothy 2:3-4 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
Habakkuk 2:14 For the earth will be filled With the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, As the waters cover the sea. (Knowledge of the glory of the Lord = SALVATION)
Revelation 7:9 After these things I looked, and behold, great multitude which no one could number, Rev. 5:9of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands,
