Nehemiah: Obstacles to Rebuilding (Part 2)

How do we deal with people who seem to be obstacles to rebuilding our personal lives, marriages, families, friendships, and church? This week in Nehemiah 2:1-8 we’ll continue to look at how God works in the hearts of people as we move into the future.

Thanks for joining us today as we study in the book of Nehemiah. Dan Werthman, our interim pastor, will be leading us in a multi-week journey through the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem's wall. In our lives and in our church we often feel as if there can be no recovery from a destructive past. However, Nehemiah shows us that there is nothing that cannot be rebuilt - as long as we seek God's will in our lives. a

Nehemiah’s Heart to Rebuild:
Nehemiah 2:17: let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem

What Is Your Heart?
· Broken Marriage
· Fractured family
· Damaged friendship
· Divided church
· Segregated city
· Relationship with God

NEHEMIAH’S VISION TO REBUILD
Nehemiah 2:5: I said to the king, ”…send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' graves, that I may rebuild it.”

Nehemiah 2:12: And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem

OBSTACLES TO REBUILDING
1. Opposition
Nehemiah 2:10: when Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite servant heard this, it displeased them greatly that someone had come to seek the welfare of the people of Israel.
.
2. Hopelessness
Nehemiah 2:11-12 – So I went to Jerusalem and was there three days… And I told no one what my God had put into my heart to do for Jerusalem.

3. Homeostasis
Nehemiah 2:14 (NLT): Then I went to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but my donkey couldn't get through the rubble.

CLEARING THE WAY FOR REBUILDING
1. Get Real About the Rubble
Nehemiah 2:17: Then I said to them, "You see the trouble we are in, how Jerusalem lies in ruins with its gates burned…”

Luke 5:31-32: Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

2. Reconnect the Horizontal to the Vertical
Nehemiah 2:17b: “Come, let us build the wall of Jerusalem, ”

2 Thessalonians 1:12
That the name of our Lord Jesus will be honored because of the way you live.

John 13:35: By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.

3. Ask For God’s Help and Strength
Nehemiah 2:18: I told them of …And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work.

Ephesians 3:16: I pray that out of [God’s] glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being,

Matthew 11:28-29: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
