8.13.17 - Flexible Faith (Daniel series - part 6)

You’re listening to the sixth and final message in a series out of the Old Testament book of Daniel called, “Faith in the Fire.” Our world is constantly changing and that poses a unique challenge for anyone trying to follow Jesus. This series is all about the question, “what does it look like to remain faithful to God in an ever-changing and sometimes hostile world?” In this final message Mike suggests that if you’re going to be faithful to God in the context of a rival kingdom your faith has to be flexible. We often talk about faith as needing to be strong, but in this message Mike will argue that more often than not what’s needed is faith that is flexible enough to accommodate newer, deeper, or fuller truth.

Big Idea: If you're going to remain faithful to God in the context of a rival kingdom you have to allow reason and experience to conversationally influence your belief and behavior
The importance of scripture, tradition, reason, and experience
This is the only explicit reference to resurrection in the OT. Not taught in their scriptures or by their tradition. It was theological development based on their lived experience with God.
Those in the 1st century who accepted Jesus as God's Messiah, savior did so because they allowed their experience with Jesus to challenge and reshape their understanding of scripture and tradition.
We must do the same. If we do not we will sanction beliefs and behaviors that are anti-Christ because we can provide a "Biblical" justification for them.
Examples
1) Believing that the Bible grants our national leader the "moral authority" to drop nuclear weapons on another country
2) Believing that the Bible grants superior status to certain people groups
