Hebrews XII // Hebrews 12:3-18-29 - “The Shakedown: It Might Be Just What You Need”

Hebrews XII // Hebrews 12:3-18-29 - “The Shakedown: It Might Be Just What You Need”

Hebrews XII - Week 4 Title: “The Shakedown: It Might Be Just What You Need” Hebrews 12:18-29 Speaker: Donnie Hinshaw When our faith is rattled, its easy to feel discouraged and even shaken up. God reminds us that systems, relationships, and even our hope might be shaken but its in His promises we can find courage and faith to keep going. He might allow a shakedown in order to shake off the things in our lives that have no stability. Rise up, strengthen your weak knees, your God is a consuming fire and He is on your side of the shakedown. #HebrewsXIINFC #HebrewXIISeries #NeighborhoodFriends

Hebrews 12:18–21 (ESV)
A Kingdom That Cannot Be Shaken
18 For you have not come to what may be touched, a blazing fire and darkness and gloom and a tempest 19 and the sound of a trumpet and a voice whose words made the hearers beg that no further messages be spoken to them. 20 For they could not endure the order that was given, “If even a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned.” 21 Indeed, so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I tremble with fear.”

God is NOT GIVING you a SHAKEDOWN
to bring you into a deadly type of FEAR.
Hebrews 12:18-21

Hebrews 12:22-24 (ESV)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to innumerable angels in festal gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect, 24 and to Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks a better word than the blood of Abel.

God is giving us a SHAKEDOWN to bring us into a LOVING, LIFE-GIVINGFEAR through Jesus!
Hebrews 12:22-24
POINT I

Hebrews 12:25 (ESV)
25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

I. SYSTEMS will be SHAKEN:
But through our FAITH in Jesus - We are STABLE.
Hebrews 12:25a

POINT II

Hebrews 12:25 (ESV)
25 See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

II. RELATIONSHIPS will be SHAKEN:
But in God’s PRESENCE - We are SECURE.
Hebrews 12:25b

“Man approaches God most nearly when he is in one sense least like God. For what can be more unlike that fullness and need, sovereignty and humility, righteousness and penitence, limitless power and a cry for help?”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves
POINT III

Hebrews 12:26–27 (ESV)
26 At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” 27 This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain.

HOPE will be SHAKEN:
But in God’s PROMISES - We remain CONFIDENT.
Hebrews 12:26-27

Remember this passage from last week . . .
Hebrews 12:11 (ESV)
11 For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

HOW TO RESPOND WHEN BEING SHAKEN AND STIRRED

Hebrews 12:28–29 (ESV)
28 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, 29 for our God is a consuming fire.

Be GRATEFUL for the MOMENTS YOU ARE SHAKENto anUNSHAKEABLE FAITH.

He is stirring up GRATITUDE - “Therefore let us be grateful . . . “
He is stirring up COURAGE - “ . . . for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken,”
He is stirring up WORSHIP - “ . . .let us offer to God acceptable worship”
He is stirring up REVERENTWONDER - “ . . . with reverence and awe,”
He is stirring up a FIRE in you that is UNSHAKEABLE - “for our God is a consuming fire.”
