John 4:24
God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.
“The world is perishing for lack of the knowledge of God and the Church is
famishing for want of His Presence. “You can see God from anywhere, if your mind is set to love and obey Him.”
~A. W. Tozer; “The Pursuit of God”
“We tend to be a generation of Christians who major on minor matters but do not seem to possess the true measure of the gospel in the knowledge of God. We do not really know God. At best, we know about Him.”
~Sinclair Ferguson
The Westminster Shorter Catechism:
Q. What is God?
A. God is a spirit…

The Belgic Confession of Faith 1561
We all believe in our hearts and confess with our mouths that there is a single and simple spiritual being, whom we call God…

Baptist Faith and Message, Article II; “God”
There is one and only one living and true God. He is an intelligent, spiritual, and personal Being…
“God is Spirit. He is not just a spirit. He is Spirit. He has no body or parts like we do. He is the pure, underived, eternal, Spirit.”
~ Don Fortner

And He had to pass through Samaria.
John 4:4
Verse 24:
“God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”
“In John 4:24 our Savior gave a true definition, description, and declaration of God. He said to the Samaritan woman: “God is a Spirit.” This is the first truth of Christianity, and one of the most profound ever presented to the mind of man. The Sovereign of the universe is pure spirit, equally in every place and in all points of duration. He has a spiritual nature, without form or material organization. Therefore, He cannot be confined to mountaintops or closed by temple walls. Our God has no necessary connection with matter or space.”
~Milburn Cockrell
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”
~A. W. Tozer
“We tend to be a generation of Christians who major on minor matters but do not seem to possess the true measure of the gospel in the knowledge of God. We do not really know God. At best, we know about Him.”
~Sinclair Ferguson
I. God is Spirit:
“God’s spirituality means that God exists as a being that is not made of any matter, has no parts or dimensions, is unable to be perceived by our bodily senses, and is more excellent than any other kind of existence.”
~Wayne Grudem; Grudem's Systematic Theology
II. God is Immaterial:
God is not human, that he should lie,not a human being, that he should change his mind.
Numbers 23:19
God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness…
Genesis 1:26

imago Dei ("image of God")
III. God is Invisible:
“God’s invisibility means that God’s total essence, all of his spiritual being, will never be able to be seen by us, yet God still shows himself to us through His Beloved Son and His creation.”
~Wayne Grudem
The Baptist Confession of Faith 1689:
The Lord our God is… a most pure spirit, invisible, without body…
Colossians 1:15
He is the “invisible God.”

1 Timothy 1:17
“To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever.”

John 1:18
No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known.

John 14:8-9
Philip said to Him, “Lord show us the Father” … Jesus said, “He who has seen Me has seen the Father.”
“The invisible God, who once made Himself visible in Christ, now makes Himself visible in Christians, if we love one another. It is a breathtaking claim. The local church cannot evangelize, proclaiming the gospel of love, if it is not itself a community of love.
~John Stott; Our Guilty Silence
Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
In light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
Most blessèd, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
Almighty, victorious, Thy great Name we praise.

(Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise; Walter C. Smith, 1876)

John 1:14

He [Christ] is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature….
Hebrews 1:3a
IV. God is Infinite:
“He is infinite as to space and time.”
~C.D. Cole

“With God there are no ontological (essence or being) boundaries!”
~R. C. Sproul
If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
