hey

"Am I my Brother's Keeper"?

4:1-2 Eve gives birth and thanks the Lord for his help and her sons shepherd and farm the earth, what does this picture remind us of what we have already read? Gen 1:28-29

4:3-5 what kind of details does the author leave out in this scene? do we find out why God didn't accept Cain's offering? Why does the author leave these details out?

4:6-7 A. Is God’s favor achievable by Cain? How so? Was God’s rejection because of Cain’s performance? Or something deeper? Let’s read Micah 6:7-8
B.Read Ephesians 4:27. How is what Paul wrote similar to God’s warning to Cain that temptation was like a crouching beast? What does it mean to “give the devil a foothold”? How did Cain do this? How do believers do this today?

4:8-12 A. What do we learn from Cain’s reaction to being angry at God? What did his anger have to do with his little brother? What do we learn about Cain's heart in these verses? Did God try to prevent Abel’s untimely death?
B. What is Ironic and tragic about Cain’s Response to God’s question about his brother’s whereabouts? (v9). Is it possible to hide something from God? What is reassuring that God hears everyone’s cries?(v10). Read
Isaiah 30:18-19 NLT So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God. Blessed are those who wait for his help. O people of Zion, who live in Jerusalem, you will weep no more. He will be gracious if you ask for help. He will surely respond to the sound of your cries.

4:13-16 Was Cain’s response to being cursed a repentant heart? Or self pity? (The Hebrew word for “punishment” can be translated “Iniquity”.) How do you characterize the Lord’s response to his complaint?(v15). What does it say about God?

❤ Jesus showed us in Matthew 5 how physical murder starts with the heart, and is much more than just stopping someone’s pulse. Most people we know have not murdered anyone (hopefully), So how does Jesus show that we are all part of the problem of Evil?
“Evil is not just where blood has been spilled. Evil is in the self-absorbed human heart.”Ravi Zacharias

What is God’s Answer this horrible problem with humanity?
Ezekiel 11:19-20 NLT And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart, so they will obey my decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.
1 John 3:1 MEV Consider how much love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God. Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.

Cultural Insight

The main exegetical problem with 4:7 comes in trying to interpret the phrase that the NIV translates “sin is crouching at your door.” The word translated “sin” is a feminine form, yet the participle robeṣ (“is crouching”) is clearly masculine singular as are the pronominal suffixes connected to “desire” and “rule.” Recent commentators have preferred repointing “robeṣ” to “rabiṣ,” seeing it as a reference to a well-known Mesopotamian demon who lingers around doorways. This would make sense of the reference to the doorway in this verse. “Sin” is then being portrayed as a doorway demon waiting for its victim to cross the threshold. From the Old Babylonian period on in Mesopotamia, such demons were considered evil and were thought to ambush their victims. -John Walton
