PARKING LOT WORK
The new parking lot work is tentatively scheduled for the week of July 24, depending on weather conditions. We will keep you updated if this will affect our Wednesday services or if the schedule changes.

FAITH PROMISE COMMITMENT
We collected our Faith Promise Pledges last Sunday and we raised $359 towards our $640 monthly goal. PTL!

We realize not everyone was here last week to participate so we will continue receiving pledge promise envelopes for the next 2 weeks. The actual pledge offerings will be received on the first Sunday of each month beginning in August.

Clarification: We currently have a building fund account to which many of you are contributing. This is separate from our pledge fund. The building fund is uniquely used for raising funds for a new building and not used for daily operations or debt reduction.

If you are donating to the building fund, please specify that on your envelope or check. If you are contributing for the faith promise pledge, please indicate that on your envelope or check. We want to be sure that each donation is going to the correct account. Thank you for your help!

To show how God is already at work, we received a commitment from an anonymous donor who has pledged to match all our pledges up to a total of $10,000!! Therefore if we receive contributions totaling $10,000, this donor will contribute another $10,000! What an awesome blessing! To God be the Glory! Let’s hit that $10,000 mark!

Last week...

In our study of the life of David, last week we ended with chapter 18.
Saul’s fear and hatred of David was escalating and things were not getting any better for David.
We ended with 1 Samuel 18:28-29
https://www.doverassembly.com/sermons/july-2nd-2017/
Have you ever wondered why God allowed this process in David’s life?

He was called to be the king many years before he actually took the throne. Some scholars believe it may be as many as 10 years.

He would be in exile from his hometown and his friends for 10 years before God fulfilled his promise.
"David would begin 10 years of exile during which God would make a leader of him."

~ Warren Wiersbe
David had the heart God wanted but he didn’t have the life experience.

What is the heart that God was looking for? What are the characteristics that God looks for in a person?
I. DAVID WAS HUMBLE.
II. DAVID WAS TRUSTING.
III. DAVID WAS OBEDIENT.
IV. DAVID WAS REPENTANT.
David had the makings of a great leader because he inherently had trust, obedience and the ability to repent. These are qualities that Saul never had.

But the question for us is, do we possess these qualities?
ARE WE REALLY TRUSTING?
Do we allow our fear overwhelm our trust in God.

God used the time of trouble for David to build his trust.

The only way we as believers can grow our trust is to be put in situations that require us to trust God.

If we never have to rely on God for anything, we never improve our trust.

David’s trust in God was growing because he had nothing else to rely on.
ARE WE REALLY OBEDIENT?
Do we obey God in every area of our lives?

Obviously nobody obeys God perfectly all the time and David was obviously no exception.

But the difference was he had a heart to.
ARE WE REALLY REPENTANT?
It has been said before that David committed worse sins than Saul, the difference was when confronted about them, he repented of them.

Are we the type that never accepts responsibility for our actions? Do we constantly seek to blame others for our actions?

Or do we man up (woman up) and accept that we have sinned ourselves without any outside help, repent of it let it go and move on?
Any professional athlete will tell you they had the natural ability but they needed a coach or mentor to help them develop it.

These 10 years are the development time for David.
God will place people in our lives for a certain amount of time to be an encouragement, or a teacher or a mentor or a protector. But they will not always be there for us and they will not travel the same path that we have.
God was in the process of removing everything from David’s life so his total dependence would be on God alone.

It’s at this point that David writes Psalm 59.
Psalm 59:1-2 - NIV
59:1 For the director of music. [To the tune of] "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam. When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me. 2 Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men.
David's leadership and trust in God was beginning to grow.

In his flight, where did he first go?
Samuel was a godly friend from his short past that he knew could help him. Ramah was Samuel’s hometown.

He knew he could depend on Samuel to lead him in the right direction.

We all need from time to time, help and guidance from godly friends and family.

People that we know will lead us in God’s direction, not voice their own opinions.
Notice where they went first -- to God!

They took time to worship and pray and seek God. And they would have the prophets that were there, to also pray for them.
WHY IS CHURCH SO IMPORTANT?
We all need to be around godly people where we can worship God, seek his wisdom and have others pray for us.

How would he know that unless he had spies in the school of the prophets?

The enemy is everywhere and we have to be on guard.

But if you are seeking God, trust God to protect you from harm.
A FEW POINTS ABOUT THIS PASSAGE...
1. While David and Samuel were seeking God, the Holy Spirit stopped any attack on them. While we seek God and his wisdom and protection, the Holy Spirit will guard us as well.

2. The enemy doesn’t stop at one attack. He will continue his assault, but as we keep trusting God, he will fail every time.

3. Saul and all his men had a religious experience and had a spiritual manifestation. Both sent from God. But those alone do not indicate a person is saved. Experiences and manifestations alone do not indicate whether a person is saved and does not alone validate someone’s walk. A person’s lifestyle and character is what indicates their spiritual life. That is accentuated by the manifestations and experiences, not the other way around.

4. When the people asked is Saul was a prophet, that question called in to doubt Saul’s leadership. A king could not be a prophet and a prophet couldn’t be a king. So the people around Saul were questioning if he was their king or not. This was a continuing of his decline and was now visible to everyone.
As Christians, we will always be challenged by God to become more than what we think we can become. Each one of us is God’s leader in the making. And unfortunately, really the only way to ascend to that position is through the school of hard knocks.

It took every experience that David had to make him what he was. It took every experience for him to write most of the psalms.

It took the hardship and the 10 years of exile for him to fully comprehend God’s goodness, faithfulness, protection and provision.
If you feel like you are on the run from the enemy, first know that God is with you even when no one else is and second, trust God to bring you through. He did it for David, he will do it for you.

I am the Lord and I change NOT!
