The Natural Man
Natural man—This is not referring to a weak Christian rather someone who is not a Christian. This person completely is dependent upon human faculties without the aid of the Holy Spirit.
Identification:
The natural man is at home in this world and is not in the family of God.
Jude 19; Romans 8:9
His Spiritual Assets:
He has none. Because he is unsaved and without the Holy Spirit, he has no spiritual resources.
His Spiritual Abilities:
He lives in the flesh and cannot please God.
Romans 8:8
“Those who are in the flesh cannot please God.”
He does not understand spiritual things.
He is subject to the impulse of sin without any strength to resist it.
John 8:34
“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.’ ”
He is in spiritual bondage and cannot free himself.
His Spiritual Need:
He is blinded to God’s truth and especially the Gospel (1 Corinthians 1:18, 23; 2 Corinthians 4:3-4).
1 Corinthians 1:18
“For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”
He needs the supernatural new birth to be rescued out of this horrible spiritual condition.

A carnal Christian is a believer who is living in open rebellion against God, they look more like the world than they look like Jesus and they are still controlled by their passions.
Romans 7:18
“For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.”
Galatians 6:8
“For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.”
Identification:
The Carnal man is saved but is led by and serve his passions rather than Christ.
His Spiritual Assets:
Possesses the Holy Spirit but is not led by or filled with the Holy Spirit.
His Spiritual Abilities:
Lacks spiritual depth in his relationship with Christ and exhibits very little biblical knowledge or growth in Christ.
Hebrews 5:12
“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food.”
Relationships with other believers in Christ are shallow.
Has no appetite for truth or following Christ whole-heartedly.
Segments life into compartments to ease his conscience.
Makes excuses for disobedience to God’s Word.
The Traits of the Carnal Mind:
1. Prideful
2. Needy
3. Impatient
4. Unteachable
5. Angry
6. Jealous
7. Lustful
8. Dishonest
9. Unbelief
10. Hard
His Spiritual Need:
Repentance of a sinful lifestyle and walk by faith.
1 John 1:9
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

He is filled with the Holy Spirit and exhibits the fruit of the Spirit of God in his life.
Galatians 5:22-23
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.”
His Spiritual Assests:
The spiritual man manifests a hunger for the Word of God- Matthew 4:4
The spiritual man manifests a spirit of dependency and prayer – Luke 6:12
The spiritual man manifests a spirit of humility and obedience – Mark 10:45
His Spiritual Abilities:
He possesses an unhindered capacity to understand the things of God –
John 14:26; 16:13
Being filled with the Holy Spirit believer he relies on the Word of God and the Spirit of God to provide wisdom and guidance.
His Spiritual Need:
He seeks to continuously live under the control of the Holy Spirit.
