hey
God still loved David in spite of his sins.

God still loves us in spite of our sins. We just need to be mindful of them to actually repent of them.
Now we come to 1 Samuel 18.

The battle is over, Goliath is dead, the Israelites beat down the Philistines and they are returning home as winners.

Saul finds out who he is and talks with him for a bit.

1 Samuel 18:1

2 Things to Note...

1) This is not a reference to either of them being gay. The Hebrew phraseology indicates that they were best friends. That’s it.

2) Jonathan was much older than David, old enough to lead troops into battle.

1 Samuel 13:3

Jonathan was next in line for the throne. He was much older that David but he knew what God had planned.

He became a mentor and protector of David. He was a soldier and now David was a soldier too.

They had a brothers in arms comradery. They both understood battle and Jonathan was becoming a father figure to David.

1 Samuel 18:2

So what's happening so far?

David beats the giant, Israel then beats the Philistines, they come home. Saul is enamored by David and thinks he can be a good mentor to David.

However, Jonathan and David become friends and Jonathan takes on the roll that Saul thought he would have.

1 Samuel 18:3

1 Samuel 18:4

2 Reasons This Is Significant...

1) It made David an equal with Jonathan.

2) He acknowledged that one day David would be king, not Jonathan.
Jonathan was more interested in what God wanted than what he wanted.

How many of us can say that?

Is what God wants, more important than what I want?

Is my service to God more important than my comfort?

Luke 17:7-10

Jonathan wasn’t making a big deal of this. He wasn’t marching around saying look what I am doing.

This was done inside and as far as we know, only those in the house knew.

So life inside the palace goes on...

1 Samuel 18:5

Here we are seeing the beginning of the great divide between Saul and David.

He was doing great work and winning battles for the king.

But Jonathan was supposed to be that person...

1 Samuel 18:6-7

You would think this is a good thing...your main officer is getting the victory over your enemies. You are the leader and the guy you promoted is doing his job well.

As a leader, this should be your desired goal.

But Saul was a very insecure person. He wasn’t secure in his position.

A secure leader is excited when their people do well, because when they succeed, the whole nation, (Under David’s leading) or church does well.

1 Samuel 18:8-9

“When a leader nurtures himself on pride, jealousy and fear, he suspects everybody.” - Warren Wiersbe
Envy is when you want what others have, or feel that don’t deserve it.

Jealousy is fear of losing what you do have.

Both emotions will destroy you.

James 3:16

Saul became jealous of David. And he opened himself up to every kind of evil.

If we become jealous of someone to the point of it consuming us, we open ourselves up to every kind of evil.

You’ll do things you never thought you would. You will say or do things that you know now you’d never do.

But when you become jealous of someone or something, you open yourselves up to the enemy taking charge.

You will jettison everything you believe to satisfy your jealousy.

That is exactly what happened to Saul.

1 Samuel 18:10-11

Jealousy causes us to react in sinful ways if we do not control that emotion.

Jealousy causes us to lose our judgment and begin to act on impulse rather than truth.

If Saul were more concerned about pleasing God rather than himself or others, he would have no reason to fear or be jealous.
If we have others around us that do better than we do, we should celebrate what God is doing through them and be secure in what God has given you to do and be secure in the ability God gave you to do it.

If we don’t control it, jealousy will become fear as we focus on losing what we think we have.

1 Samuel 18:12

When we lose our relationship with God, fear comes in. The more we walk away from where God calls us, the more we will be fearful of anyone and anything.

1 Samuel 18:13

If God calls you to something, he will equip you with what you need and give you the ability to accomplish it.

Zechariah 4:10

Do you feel a burden to step out for God? Do you not have enough to accomplish it?

God rejoices to see you start it.

When you start something that God puts on your heart, it will succeed.

1 Samuel 18:14-16

Some will be jealous and fearful of your success, but many will rejoice because of your willingness to trust God to be with you.

David was able to be successful, aside from God being with him, I believe Jonathan’s friendship and mentoring and support enabled David to be who God wanted him to be.

If you feel called to something, seek out someone who can help you discern what it takes to be successful.

And when you arrive, be secure in the position to which God called you.

Trust those who God gives you and celebrate their successes.

All Israel celebrated David’s successes, so we should celebrate others around us.
