“Who or what you follow will determine the future you will experience.”
This week, we’re going to explore another distraction that can consume us. It’s a subject that is very personal to all of us because it deals with the promotion of me, myself and I. It’s called PRIDE. In our household, it’s commonly referred to as the big “P”.

I’m not talking about the good kind of pride. The kind that makes you are proud of your team or your kids. I’m talking about the kind of pride that God hates.
Haughty eyes are an arrogant man’s windows to the world. From the lofty perch of his own superiority, he uses them to look down upon others. From his self-made pedestal, he fancies he can see with greater clarity than his Creator - Tim Challies

The Lord detests the proud; they will surely be punished(Proverbs 16:5). Following pride would not be a good thing for us to follow.
What is Pride?
C.S. Lewis says, “According to Christian teachers, the essential vice, the utmost evil, is Pride. Unchastity (sexual suggestiveness), anger, greed, drunkenness, and all that, are mere fleabites in comparison: it was through Pride that the devil became the devil: Pride leads to every other vice: it is the complete anti-God state of mind.”

When a person follows after pride, they are convinced of their superiority in achievement, intellect, morality, or spirituality. Simply put, they are consumed with themselves.
Why does God hate pride so much?
God hates pride because it keeps us from experiencing relationship with Him. Remember, Jesus didn’t die for religion, He died for relationship.
Psalm 10:4 (NIV) explains why pride stops us from having a close relationship with our Heavenly Father: “In his pride the wicked man does not seek him; in all his thoughts, there is no room for God.
“Loving God, Loving our Church and Loving the World”.
So, how do we make sure we don’t follow after pride?

Here is the answer, By choosing to follow humility instead.
So, what is humility?

Let me define humility by reading Philippians 2:3-4.
Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand.
Pride thinks self first. When we are not thinking about others or when we are focusing on self-promotion we are following pride.
“I completely submit myself to you and your leadership. You are now my pastor.”
When you walk in humility you cannot follow after pride.
Have you been following pride? What area in your life could use a good dose of humility?
